What’s more, on its brightest setting the 314 looks a little dim, which could be problematic if you want to use the laptop outside on a sunny day. Colour looks flat too, resulting in a passable viewing experience. That should, in theory, give it a slim advantage when benchmarked. However, this hasn't been demonstrated just yet, partly because it's a new processor and not many systems have been tested with this CPU at the helm. So, if you’re looking for a budget PC which can perform fairly demanding tasks, I think it’s an okay processor.

Acceptable laptop screens graduated to 1,920-by-1,080-pixel or higher resolutions years ago, but you can still find 1,366-by-768 panels in the 11.6-inch segment. Such a low pixel count means the Samsung won't show fine details, and letters look faintly fuzzy. (As with most Chromebooks, you can dial in lower "looks like" resolution scaling if you want icons or screen elements to appear larger.) Also, the Chromebook 4's antique twisted-nematic (TN), rather than in-plane-switching (IPS), panel technology translates to narrow viewing angles and dishwater-murky colors. I’m happy to report that Acer’s budget beast does perform those day-to-day tasks well, with its Intel Celeron 4000 processor under the bonnet providing a relatively snappy user experience. Given the cost of the Acer Chromebook 314, don’t expect this laptop to turn any heads. On the design front things are arguably as expected. After reducing the brightness and setting a video on loop, the 314 lasted a grand total of 13 and a half hours before shutting down.

The Duet was more competitive in this test, while the Acer Spin 713 dominated again. The Samsung performed solidly, though Android apps are awkward without a touch screen. While this laptop isn’t ideal for viewing video, the 14-inch screen size is great for compact laptops for productivity purposes, with anything smaller seeming too small, and anything bigger a little ostentatious. Note that it isn’t a touchscreen, which is a shame for a Chromebook. Performance

It’s no surprise that this is a Chromebook that’s clearly been built to a budget. The spec is par for the course for a low-end device, with an Intel Celeron processor and 4GB of RAM, while the 14in screen only has a bog-standard 1,366 x 768 HD resolution. Even though the Chromebook 314-H looks more expensive than it is, you still have to put up with most of the compromises you’d find in smaller Chromebooks at this kind of price point, only stretched across a bigger frame. Plus, with only 32GB of storage, there’s not a lot of space to install Android apps.

Its 4GB of RAM is plenty for web browsing and video viewing, and even opening a shed-load of Chrome tabs at once didn’t slow the 314 down too much – it only caused images to take a smidgen longer to load, but overall, the slowdown was pretty negligible.Acer’s Chromebook 314 is one of the best budget laptops out there thanks to its attractive price, good build quality and port selection, and exemplary battery life.
