About this deal

With his large bright eyes, long legs, finely boned thin frame and snaky tail, he is definitely part greyhound. Other favourite authors included A A Milne and the fairy tales of The Grimm Brothers and Hans Christian Andersen. Lynley Dodd graduated from the Elam School of Art in Auckland with a diploma in Fine Arts, majoring in sculpture. The breeds of dogs, the types of houses and the plants growing in each garden can generally be identified.

First published in 1983, Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy by New Zealand author Dame Lynley Dodd has become a classic bedtime storybook for Aussie and Kiwi kids. After all a relative of ours has three naughty minature daschunds who regularly make it onto the kitchen bench via a dining chair and the dining table.Close observation is encouraged by the inclusion in many of the pictures of a tiny glimpse of the dog who has been named on the previous page, as it approaches or walks out of the picture, showing only the point of a nose or the tip of a tail. When Schnitzel disrupts his family’s holiday packing they forget to put something very important in the car . and Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy" accompany a series of illustrations showing Hairy Maclary sniffing the bottom of a lamppost, burrowing into a hedge, barking at some birds and raiding a garbage can. The pictures and the written words together tell the story, and the illustrations and their meanings are as important as the text. Exuberant artwork and bouncy rhymes come together perfectly in books like Slinky Malinki and Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy.

Although the books are designed to entertain young children, they are not intended as "early readers", as are, for example, the " Cat in the Hat" books by Dr. Bitzer Maloney is the only other member of Hairy Maclary‘s gang that, like Hairy Maclary, is of mixed-breed parentage. In the 2019 TVNZ series Goodnight Kiwi the prime minister Jacinda Ardern read Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy; the episode aired on TVNZ 2 on Christmas Day. This time, Schnitzel von Krumm - with the very low tum - is up to mischief, chasing, digging, hiding and hustling. Hairy is always bumptious and bustly, but a confrontation with Scarface Claw will send him straight back home to bed. Each picture promotes investigation and discussion between the child and the reader, as events unfold in the pictures which are not described in the text. In 2015, a sculpture of Hairy Maclary and other characters from the books was officially unveiled in Tauranga on the waterfront by former prime minister John Key.

Due to the easy nature of the rhyming words, I feel young children up to the age of six/seven would benefit from this book.

A new paperback edition of the story about everyone's favourite dog, Schnitzel von Krumm, from everyone's favourite author, Lynley Dodd. For example, the noise made by a stranded cat and the excited dogs who discover it is described as a "cacophony". Schnitzel Von Krumm is an enjoyable, rhyming story about a little Dachshund that is very mischievous.

Another great book from LD, this time about the mischievous Schnitzel von Krumm, who we are always told, can't climb trees, but gets into so much mischief throughout the story that eventually, if he wants to catch the cat, he's going to have to climb a tree. The animals in this series, unlike the creatures of Beatrix Potter's stories, are not given human thoughts and motives, their actions tell the stories, and reflect their animal natures. There are plenty to discover, and just like Hairy Maclary, they all feature Lynely's uniquely exuberant artwork and gorgeously readable rhymes! Like all of Dodd's books, Dogs Never Climb Trees drew us in with appealing illustrations and engaging rhymes. There is a segment of text which appears frequently and reads, “He can hustle and tease with the greatest of ease, but everyone knows that dogs NEVER climb trees.
