About this deal

It has a bright yellow colour and has been used to support skin health for centuries – not just mud fever – sulphur is also used to support other skin issues too.

i knew a girl that used pig oil on her welsh to make it look shiney at shows and never affected it maybe just your horse has sensitive skin and this product just doesnt agree with him. and by this morning he has 3 huge splits in the flesh under his pastern above the heel on his left fore.

Ye i would never put pig oil on in summer its actually meant for feathered horses to help grow and maintain mane and feather i use on all my traditionals all through winter to stop there feathers burning off and it acts as a good mud guard too!

i shall also take care not to rub it into his fetlocks and try to have it just on the feathers as I feel it has helped them. On it's own I think it is pretty gentle on the skin, but when mixed with sulphur, it can act as an irritant. Pig Oil does not contain any sulphur, it can be mixed with sulphur powder to create a paste that can be used on scabby areas.I am using it for the first time on my traditional cob Dylan, hoping it will help with mud during the winter and keep his feathers looking good.

The suphur kills mites and the oil protects the hair and creates conditions that the mites do not want to live in. OH's horse did have a mild bout of mud fever last winter (we were told - we've only had him a couple of months) so i'm thinking on maybe trying pig oil and sulphur on him through the winter as a preventative measure. If you turn your horses out through winter, or they live out in muddy conditions, my top tip is PIG OIL. Although i can imagine it wont be suitable for every horse thats why i always do a little test patch first. My theory is that if they're ok with baby oil, and they have reasonable skin, it's great as a preventative.

I only used it with the sulphur when they actually had mud fever as it's supposed to help it heal, but once it's all gone pig oil on its own is fine.

Using this blog we want to share some of the knowledge we have gained through nearly 30 years of experience. The pig oil and sulphur is great it keeps the mites away and protects against mudfever promotes hair growth and whitens there feather after a couple of days. I'm eternally grateful to TheresaF on here for her copious notes about the use of this, it has made winter a lot easier for us personally. This morning I was going to do a patch test with Pig oil which someone gave me but I couldn't find it. If anyone is thinking of using pig oil on thin skinned animals - don't -, please just opt to rinse the mud off thoroughly every time they come in - rather than risk pig oil.Its consistency makes it easy to rub into feathers, to help provide a water repellent barrier between the horse’s skin and the mud.
