The film’s intermittent delights are momentarily satisfying, but then numbness sets in, like the brain freeze that blooms after you slurp on the film’s titular ice-cream treat. At 35:31, Sam is shot in the arm, just above the elbow, about 3 inches below the writing on her bowling jacket.

Particularly Game of Thrones’ Lena Headey, who outshines star Karen Gillan, aka Guardians of the Galaxy’s Nebula. So why does she spend Gunpowder Milkshake doing an ineffective Uma Thurman impression instead of cultivating her own take on Sam? And like so many recent movies aimed at a female audience, it’s full of feminist promises that wind up feeling thin. Predictably, we’re left with an open ending, the prospect of more to come on the way, a new series waiting to be milked. But while there’s barely a second you won’t be able to predict, films such as this live and die by the quality of their action set pieces rather than their inventive plotting and Papushado is, if nothing else, a skilled stage manager.Swear words including "hell," "f--k," "f--king," "s--t," "f--ked," "smartass," bitch," "goddammit," "bastards," "a--hole.

Meanwhile, Nathan learns that one of the henchmen Sam killed in an earlier job was the son of Jim McAlister, the head of a powerful criminal empire. Gillan is an incredibly adept action performer but is overshadowed by her elders, with Headey making for a commanding mother (if a confusing one, given the 14-year age difference in real life) and small but impactful turns from Angela Bassett, Carla Gugino and Michelle Yeoh filling out the cast.

The scornful mobster sends teams of goons to track Sam and kill her, forcing her to find refuge with her absentee mother (Lena Headey). Lots of killing, including via exaggerated gun violence, decapitation, stabbings, grenade/car explosions, and hand-to-hand combat.
