And then we've not even talked about its ability to take 1.4x and 2x teleconverters with good results. The OM-30 also takes 5 SR44 batteries which mount in a compartment on the left hand side of the front of the camera. In place of the normal battery compartment is a switch to turn off the beeper. All features of the camera have been designed ergonomically to make the camera easy to handle—even for beginners.

Vignetting is the darkening of the corners of an image relative to the center of the image. There are three types of vignetting: optical, mechanical, and natural vignetting. If using manual mode, you can adjust the shutter speed by moving the ring located at the base of the lens mount. Fast-forward two weeks and I just can’t fathom why the OM-2 is so often regarded as second-rate to its competition. This often overlooked and undervalued machine offers so much more than its contemporaries in the areas of detail-oriented conveniences, ease of use, and innovation. With fantastic performance, unprecedented compactness, and sheer fun-factor, it’s clear that the common opinion of the Olympus machine is completely incongruous to its actual value as a photographic device. The nucleus of the system was a series of compact bodies divided into an advanced series and a later consumer-oriented series. The first model was the all-mechanical M-1 which, after pressure from Leica (which already had an M1 model), was renamed OM-1. At the same time the M system was renamed OM System. The camera included a full-aperture TTL Cadmium-sulphide (CdS) exposure meter, and a bayonet lens mount of relatively large diameter. By the end of the 1970s it was joined by the semi-automatic OM-2 and consumer-oriented OM-10. Olympus continued the naming pattern with the 'professional' OM-3 and OM-4, and the consumer-level OM-20, OM-30 and OM-40. The cameras were accompanied by a series of Zuiko-branded lenses, as well as a generous selection of accessories. The majority of OM bodies and lenses were manual-focus only; the OM-707 of 1986 was the only true autofocus model. The bad news is none of the T-Series flashes will do TTL flash with the OM-2. You need the OM-2n for that.This is kinda ironic for me. In my youth days as a photographer (late 80s to early 90s), the latest Minoltas were way out of my league, especially price wise. Their SLRs were the kings of auto focus but as I’d never be able to afford one, I never gave them serious consideration. I certainly never thought I’d own one. With this system, the camera becomes relatively easier to use. All you have to do is set the aperture value, and the camera sets the perfect shutter speed. The OM lens was designed to sit 46mm (measured from the lens mounting ring, or flange) from the film plane. The combination of on-lens aperture control and the generous ' flange focal distance' make OM lenses adaptable (with limited functionality) to a variety of other camera systems – including Canon EOS models – by using a mount-specific adapter.

It also uses the same accessories as other OM cameras. So, you don’t have to worry about using anything other than the incredible Zuiko lenses. I can’t recommend this camera enough to anyone. It doesn’t matter if you’re well experienced, or a beginner, everyone should give the OM System a try. The OM-G is an excellent camera to learn on, and is reliable enough for any professional to enjoy. Plainly put – it’s a camera that just works, and gives great results. I then grabbed the car keys and rallied the troops (dog and partner) for a walk around the harbour and prom in our local town of Maryport. Not knowing if the camera even worked, I thought it would be best not to travel the extra 20 minutes to the lake district (on this occasion). It hit me while out on the walk how slow the process of taking pictures on film was. I instantly loved the idea of detaching from the digital age, not knowing what I had taken or if it had turned out in a usable picture. Meaning “blissful light”, Zuiko lenses are generally considered to be among the sharpest vintage lenses and offer world-class performance in a compact form. There are more than fifty available lenses, ensuring that virtually any type of photo can be created with the OM system.As far as I can see, the OM10 and OM-G are identical cameras. The thing that mainly sets them apart is that the OM10 is auto, while the OM-G – also having auto – has a manual mode. The OM10 does have a manual option, but it requires a separate adapter to enable it. The OM-G, however, has the manual mode built in, making it much more convenient. The OM30 met quite limited success; Olympus' early autofocus system wasn't particularly accurate, fast or useful compared to its competitors. Minolta changed the camera market forever in 1985 with the Maxxum 7000, at which time Olympus made one more attempt at an AF OM body — the OM707 released in 1986. Again, this was a case of too little, too late and Olympus transferred focus in AF away from the OM system and into the IS line of cameras. So like I said before, the OM-G I received from my dad had a few issues with it: the aperture and the shutter speed readouts weren’t working properly. As I’ve used that camera for over a year, it was never too much of a hindrance to me – however, I really wanted one in fully working condition.

One of the main things I love about the Olympus OM-10, is the shutter sound. Every time an exposure is taken, it truly beats anything else for me. The camera is also one of the easier film cameras I’ve used – which probably comes down to it being made and marketed as an ‘entry level’ camera as mentioned above. Being a system, Olympus made numerous accessories for professional portrait, photo journalism, sport photography and scientific photography. [7] In its standard configuration the OM10 offered aperture priority automatic exposure, simple and accurate enough for a consumer camera in most lighting situations. It also offered exposure compensation for more complicated lighting situations and for more advanced users. A small plug-in manual adaptor was available as an accessory to enable manual control of shutter speed. The manual adaptor is possibly not as easy to use as the typical shutter speed ring around the lens bayonet on the OM-1.With its 5-FPS motor drive, it's the fastest SLR in its class - and the strongest, for such blazing speed demands rugged precision far beyond the ordinary. Yet it's also the lightest SLR in its range - a benefit you'll appreciate every time you raise it to your eye... which tells you it's the brightest of its breed, thanks to its unique Lumi Micron-Mate focusing screen, silver-coated prism, and multicoated reflex mirror. This allowed the OM-2000 to synchronize an electronic flash at 1/125s. Many photographers found this capability an advantage for the use of "fill flash" in daylight.
