About this deal

This is why many people will choose a smaller size (aka “downsize”) when shopping for leather shoes: they will stretch to the perfect snug fit and not become too big. If your shoes are just a little bit off, then try the hairdryer or hot water method. For shoes that need a big stretch, then the freezer method will be your best bet. Just remember, with the ice method, the areas that stretch might not be the ones you wanted, because the shoe isn’t being stretched around your foot. From my experience, the best way to stretch a climbing shoe is by using your foot, a plastic bag, and a bit of good old-fashioned brute force. This is certainly the best method for breaking in a properly fitted pair of shoes or ones that are just slightly too small. That’s a considerable advantage, and the Scrambler follows up with a good suspension system and useful features.

The time it takes a shoe to stretch ultimately depends on, the size you choose, how long you wear them for, and the materials they are made from. On average, we find that most climbing shoes start to feel considerably more comfortable after 3-5 climbing sessions. The Ascensionist does have its limitations. The drawstring closure is built directly into the body, which leaves little room for overflow at the top. To break in climbing shoes with hot water, take a hot shower in them or sit on the edge of a tub and rest your shoes under the faucet, with the closure tight. Stay under the shower for 5-10 mins, flexing your feet now and then. The type of material a shoe’s upper is made with will affect how you should size them and how long it takes to break them in.

Great Grip for Rocky Terrain

Leading on from the last point, don’t just let your climbing shoes rot away in your gym bag or car, instead, designate some time and effort to organize your climbing gear. This helps with everything from ventilation to organization and life preservation.

Wearing your shoes inside is common practice for breaking in new hiking boots or sneakers although, unlike sneakers, I don’t recommend walking around too much in your climbing shoes. Climbing shoes aren’t built for walking in, and excessive walking can ruin that beautiful downturned camber.

Climbing Shoes for Every Scenario

Whether lace or Velcro, make sure there is scope for tighter adjustment, in case the uppers stretch over time. The compromises start to show in the suspension. The thin foam shoulder straps are breathable, but they’re not as comfortable as other options. That goes double under heavy loads or on long days.
