The mind flayer nervous system was unique in that every nerve had a direct connection to the brain, meaning that a mind flayer's entire body was an extension of its brain, granting mind flayers an incredible awareness of their physical condition. [18] Illithids were capable of speaking Undercommon and Deep Speech but preferred telepathic communication. [1] [4] They also had a form of written language called Qualith, which consisted of patterns of four lines imbued with psionic energy, capable of conveying not only text but also the author's thoughts. Without the use of magic, it could only be read by other illithids. [1] [2] Meanwhile, Jim Hopper, having been imprisoned in Kamchatka, narrowly escaped the wrath of a Soviet-controlled adult Demogorgon, and was broken out of captivity by Joyce, Murray Bauman and Yuri Ismaylov. After Hopper and his ally Dmitri Antonov were freed, the group discovered a cell containing a piece of the Mind Flayer, which they called 'the particles'. In the same room, the group discovered dozens of juvenile Demogorgons, frozen in cryogenic tanks. After the group's exit from the facility, the situation involving the unleashed Demogorgon became more and more chaotic. As Soviet soldiers haphazardly fought the creature, they accidentally shattered the cell holding the captured portion of the Mind Flayer. These released particles immediately entered the bodies of the frozen Demodogs, reawakening and possessing them, and going on to slaughter the remaining personnel. While certain essential biochemicals and hormones could only be found in brain matter, illithids ate brains more so for the psychic quotient of sentient gray matter than the physical nutrients. [59] Their all-encompassing neurology granted them a unique digestive system, one that was, in a sense, cognitive and self-aware, allowing them to extract more than nourishment from their food. [18] After digging into the pumpkin patch's soil, Hopper descended into a subterranean tunnel overgrown with vines and biological material originating from the Upside Down. As he was exploring, he encountered a strange growth that sprayed a cluster of spores in his face, causing him to lose consciousness.A smaller sect of mind flayers revered another entity called Maanzecorian. It embodied a complete comprehension of knowledge and the simultaneous access to memory, thought, and aptitude. [2] It was also viewed by the illithids as a keeper of secrets. Its essence was killed by Tenebrous, the undead shadow of the demon lord Orcus sometime in the mid-14 th century DR, [52] though this fact was unknown to most at the time. [53] However, in the late 15 th century DR, mind flayer colonies dedicated to Maanzecorian were again common. [2] Due to their hatred of the sun, a few elder brains secretly worked toward the goal of extinguishing all of them, but most mind flayer communities focused on finding ways to comfortably operate under sunlight. For Season 4's 'Dimension X' scene, concept artist Michael Maher, Jr. pitched that the Mind Flayer particles were "an anti gravity element" that would lift boulders into the air, "effectively falling upwards". However, the idea was scrapped, as it would have taken too long to explain in the context of the story. [8] Name [ ]

Visual-effects producers Paul and Christina Graff were tasked with designing the creature. Because the first season incorporated several electrical interferences, they knew the second season would involve storms. Once it was decided the monster was “storm-like”, the Graffs began reseraching the look of storms and tornadoes. Steve Messing, a matte painter who was also consulted on the designs of several other Stranger Things elements, created concept art of the creature based on tornadoes, volcanoes, and other natural forces. In addition, they were inspired by volcanic eruptions with lightning storms in South America. [1] The Mind Flayer's presence was almost always accompanied by atmospheric disturbances. In the Upside Down, dark storms would rage in the skies above, with startling red lightning shooting across, illuminating the whole dimension in scarlet light. The storm seemed to be linked to Vecna's emotions; the Mind Flayer was seen looming over Hawkins Middle School, seething with Vecna's anger. The entity was gigantic, looming at least fifty stories tall [1], and sported a distinctive spider-like appearance. The Mind Flayer exercised supreme control of the Upside Down via a psychic link, with Demogorgons, vines, and Demobats forming a shared hive mind; for a period in 1985, possessed humans known as "the Flayed" also comprised part of the hive mind. In a sense, the entirety of the Upside Down was like one gigantic organism, with all its contents and agents mentally connected via the Mind Flayer.Matt Duffer told Entertainment Weekly that the shadow monster was inspired by horror classics: "There's an H.P. Lovecraft sort of approach, this inter-dimensional being that is sort of beyond human comprehension." [7] Illithids were all sexless, without male or female biological sex, [62] and once or twice in their life they would lay a clutch of eggs from which tadpoles hatched. The tadpoles were kept in the elder brain tank, where they were fed brains by caretakers and engaged in cannibalism for around ten years. [6] The elder brain also fed exclusively on tadpoles. Tadpoles that survived to maturity were put through the ceremony of ceremorphosis, where each was implanted into a humanoid victim and devoured its brain, taking its place and merging with the body to transform it into a new illithid. Only some humanoid species were suitable hosts for illithid tadpoles. [2] [6] [63]

Lovecraft, with his work actually tying into the Stranger Things universe, with Lisa from the novel "Darkness At The Edge Of Town" being a graduate of the infamous Lovecraftian college "Miskatonic University". When Bob encourages Will to confront the Mind Flayer, things go sideways. Will is possessed and starts behaving strangely. She teams up with 12-year-olds Mike Wheeler, Dustin Henderson and Lucas Sinclair. The trio is searching for their missing friend, Will Byers, who was taken by the Demogorgon to the Upside Down, though nobody knows this yet.To non-illithids, mind flayers seemed calm and collected at almost all times, dispassionate and seemingly emotionless outside of their constant desire to dominate others. [23] [33] They dismissed basal emotions like pride as fatal flaws and founded themselves on a pragmatic outlook. [30] While they might occasionally seem furious, it was difficult to discern if this was actual feeling or a ruse to manipulate others. Theories on this ranged from the belief that the mind flayers had no emotions, very few, or extreme levels of self-control, but all of these were incorrect. In truth, illithids had a whole spectrum of emotions and felt them intensely, [23] [33] sometimes even behaving irrationally because of them, [30] but these feelings were almost entirely internalized and not evident even during moments of raging inner turmoil. The mind flayer god of secrets was a veritable treasure trove of lore and knowledge, some of it of multiversal importance and other pieces seemingly innocuous bits of trivia and personal information. [9] The Philosoflayer had a desire for omniscience so great as to be a risk to his own life. [11] Powers [ ]

Mind flayers considered arcane magic an abomination. They viewed it as an inferior and corrupt form of psionic power that should disappear from the universe once the illithids regained control of it. It was speculated that this hatred was related to the role of magic in the gith rebellion. [2] Though Vecna's control of the Mind Flayer's hive mind made him powerful, the two-way nature of the psychic connection was also a point of vulnerability. Any pain felt by the connected entities was shared amongst them; the physical suffering of his thralls would translate to every other being in the hive mind, including Vecna himself. This made the hive mind a prime target for his enemies. After the gate was successfully formed, the Upside Down's psychic link to Hawkins was also re-established, reviving the fragment of the Mind Flayer laying low at Brimborn Steel Works. The cloud of particles began possessing hordes of rats, and had them consume different types of chemicals; many of the rats would then explode into bloody puddles of biomass to create a proxy form, through which Vecna (via the Mind Flayer) could operate in the human world. Possessed humans are colder to the touch than average, to the point where the temperature around possessed humans significantly decreases. Though always deferential to Ilsensine, [6] the Great Brain was also Maanzecorian's rival, hence the Rotting Oracle to spy upon it, [12] and he didn't always share all he knew with his superior. [6] Aside from her, his only ally was the drow goddess of vengeance Kiaransalee.
