About this deal

IM Jeremy Silman has won the American Open, the National Open, and the U.S. Open. Very few players have won all three prestigious events. However, Mr. Silman is better known as a lecturer, teacher, and author of over thirty-five chess books plus a book on psychological gambling called Zen and the Art of Casino Gaming. Maxwell/Macmillan, Cadogan, and Microsoft Press published Silman's books and many have been translated into German and French. In addition, English, Dutch, German, and American magazines have featured over one hundred chess articles written by Silman. But, in the Harry Potter universe, chess is more than just a fun way to pass the time- it can also be deadly! Which is perhaps unsurprising, since many things that are completely innocuous in our world can be deadly in the Harry Potter universe, including willow trees, mermaids, staircases, and so much more. Hogwarts is a surprisingly dangerous place! The filmmakers used radio and digital effects to create the movement of the giant chess pieces. The explosive effects were created using compressed air. Ronald Weasley actor Rupert Grint states 'I've actually still got a broken piece of the horse!' [7]

The board – which is made up of cardboard – folds up in four sections and it not as good as the pieces. The fact that it folds up is not ideal for gameplay since one or the other section may end up not sitting perfectly flat which can hinder gameplay. The size of the board is also very small which can make the pieces cramped up. The chess pieces are made out of die-cast zinc and PVC so apart from being extremely beautiful, they are extremely sturdy as well. Since they are metal, the pieces are very heavy and look exactly like the ones in the movie. The chessmen resemble the original pieces from the movie and are highly detailed. Different pieces can be seen carrying different weapons just like in the movie. The chess pieces of this set are made up of moderately heavy plastic mixed with another material that provides some flexibility. It’s not by any means the highest quality but still durable enough for kids to handle (or mishandle). In case you drop a piece on the floor and it breaks, you may not be able to use the ‘reparo’ spell to repair it. So, I would advise handling the pieces with care. The set is basically a toy so you can’t really expect it to provide a professional gameplay experience. It does a great job of bringing the Sorcerer’s Stone movie chess scene to life with its beautifully designed chessmen that look exactly like the ones in the movie. Some of the pieces are a little top heavy due to the added weight of the weapons the pieces are carrying. Other than that, this is the perfect chess set to combine your love for Harry Potter and chess into one. An interesting thing about this game chess set which makes it different from other Harry Potter sets is its unique body design. There is going to be so much joy playing this game because every fan knows Hogwarts houses are always coming at each other; what better way is it to play this game than on a chess set? The game is best played amidst friends because of its gameplay, rather than at home. The pieces in Th e Isle of Lewis Chess Set (Wizard’s Edition) have been made in England to the exact specifications of the original artefacts – and their cardinal and ivory colouring make them a perfect match for Harry and Ron’s set. Exactly the same as Muggle chess except the figures are animated and can be directed like troops." — Description [src] This Harry Potter themed chess set from The Noble Collection is a cool, fun, chess set that will keep the kids entertained and works perfectly as a gift. For hardcore Harry Potter fans and chess nerds as well, this set is the perfect combination – a true collector’s item. Original Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone Movie Chess Set Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone . Directed by Chris Columbus. Burbank: Warner Bros. Pictures, 2001.

A similar concept is featured in Mikhail Bulgakov's novel The Master and Margarita, where Professor Woland (alias Satan) and his retinue play with a supernatural chess set whose pieces are animate and move by themselves. At the end of year feast, Albus Dumbledore awarded Ron fifty house points for 'the best played game of chess that Hogwarts has seen these many years'. Percy Weasley proudly boasted about his brother's accomplishment. [4] Over the years, I’ve bought and used many Harry Potter themed chess sets. This puts me in a position to talk about the pros and cons of buying a particular set. Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry had a long history of producing talented Wizard's Chess players, such as the chess master Walter Aragon, as well as Brian Gagwilde, both of whom later became Headmasters at the school. Despite the school's relation to Wizard's Chess, however, they had a longstanding rivalry with Beauxbatons Academy of Magic. In an unknown year, students from the two schools played in a chess tournament, in which Hogwarts suffered a devastating loss, and Beauxbatons had remained undefeated ever since. [3] The chessboard is made of a flat cardboard and is not as high quality as the pieces. It’s just like your typical four square monopoly board and does a decent job.

In the 1985–1986 school year, Professor Minerva McGonagall played a game of Wizard's Chess when being interviewed by Jacob's sibling for their presentation at that year's Teacher Appreciation Celebration. The game underwent several phases, with McGonagall eventually winning the game. She gave one of her chess sets to Jacob's sibling as a memento. [7] The endgame position composed for the film adaptation by Jeremy Silman. The white knight on h4 was removed from the position seen in the film. WIZARD'S CHESS - A beautiful recreation of the chess set seen at the climax of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, where Hogwarts' finest ever chess game was played. If you want to experience the Harry Potter world through Lego and are ready to compromise on the wizard’s chess part of it, the Lego Harry Potter board gameis great fun. I know this doesn’t really make up for it but as Ron would say:

The Isle of Lewis Chess Set (Wizard’s Edition) should look familiar to Harry Potter fans as it’s almost identical to the set seen in The Philosopher’s Stone. In the 1995–1996 school year, there were multiple Wizard's Chess champions at Hogwarts: at least five Gryffindor champions in the Gryffindor common room, the Slytherin champion in the Great Hall, and the Ravenclaw champion in the Library. [4] Casual games [ ] 1890s [ ] The game of chess actually plays a significant role in the Harry Potter books and movies, right from the very beginning. Several characters are known to play wizard’s chess, including Gryffindor students Seamus Finnigan and Percy Weasley. Ron Weasley is also seen to be playing a game of wizard’s chess on several different occasions – he even beats Harry a few times!

Jacob's sibling: " Why is it that we don't compete in more wizard's chess competitions at this school?" Minerva McGonagall: " Because, the last time Hogwarts students entered a wizard chess competition, it didn't end well." Jacob's sibling: " What happened to them? Did they lose the tournament?" Minerva McGonagall: " Yes. They suffered a heartbreaking loss to a school with a longstanding rivalry." — Professor McGonagall discusses Hogwarts' rivalry with Beauxbatons [src]

The Regency Chess Company is delighted to finally be able to offer The Isle of Lewis Chess Set (Wizard’s Edition) to Harry Potter fans. In the position shown on the board, play would have continued as follows (moves written in algebraic notation): We can’t expect anything less from a world that introduced us to invisibility cloaks and extendable ears! The Isle of Lewis chess pieces might not be as recognisable as the world’s-standard Staunton, but their fascinating history – and mystery – make them the perfect choice for Wizard’s Chess. The pieces move under the command of the player, e.g., King to C7, and the pieces seem to be somewhat sentient, as can be seen when one of Seamus Finnigan’s chess pieces advises Harry.
