There are lots of cauliflower varieties to choose from, grouped according to harvesting time. There are faster-growing varieties for summer and autumn crops, and slower-growing varieties for harvesting in late winter and spring. If you buy several different types, you can have cauliflowers practically all year round. Their shape affords an added layer of protection, and it works like a charm. What Are Cabbage Root Flies? Cauliflower can take eight to 10 days to sprout or germinate. Cabbage root flies ( Delia radicum/Hylemya brassicae) have become problematic in my garden over the last few years. By early summer, I found myself losing at least half of my cole crop plantings to the little buggers. After doing a bit of research at the start of last season, I came up with a plan to keep cabbage root flies away from my plants, and it worked: cabbage collars. Protect seedlings and young plants from slugs and snails, and keep watch for aphids and whitefly, removing them before they multiply To harvest, cut the stem with a knife, taking the head and a few of the leaves beneath it, to protect the curd. Winter varieties – sow indoors or outdoors from late spring to early summer. These are slow growing, taking six months or more to mature, forming large heads. They need wide spacing and can take up quite a lot of room over a long period. Most modern varieties are very hardy and can be harvested through to spring.Brassica Collars offer a simple solution to stop the cabbage root fly, a notorious allotment pest that can cause serious damage to your brassica crops including broccoli, cabbages, cauliflowers, calabrese and brussels sprouts. You can use cardboard boxes to supply the material for your plant collars. Just flatten the boxes and cut them into pieces that are the right size for your collars. You can also use a flexible plastic sheet to make a plant collar. The same concept we used for cardboard plant collars would apply here.

If you are worried about damaging the seedling, you can cut a line from the outer edge to the center hole and wrap the brassica collar around the seedling that way. You will then have to staple the cut edges together for the collar to be effective. Just be sure that the collar opening can be enlarged as the plant grows. For consistent crops of tasty, high-quality caulis, it’s best to choose F1 hybrid varieties, and if you’ve ever had problems with clubroot disease, select resistant varieties. Look too for varieties with an RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM), which shows they performed well in trials – see our list of AGM fruit and veg for RHS-recommended varieties of cauliflowers and many other crops.

Brassica downy mildew – this consists of light green spots on leaves developing into a larger, darker color with fuzzy mold appearing. Ensure there’s plenty of circulation and sunlight for the plants. Or, try sowing disease resistant varieties. The height is 4 inches, so we would need to cut a rectangular piece of cardboard that is 4 inches by 6.28 inches. Then, we would curl the cardboard into a tube and join the ends with staples to make our collar. As well as traditional white or cream cauliflowers, there are varieties with striking purple, orange-yellow or lime-green heads for added ornamental appeal, both in the garden and on the plate. They generally keep their colour when cooked, unless boiled for too long. White colored varieties of cauliflower will need shading – also known as 'blanching' –to keep them from discoloring, so that they will be tender and white when they are harvested.

The female cabbage root fly lay eggs in the soil close to the brassica plant. The egg hatches and the larvae eat the finer roots leaving only a rotting stump. With a collar in place, the female lays eggs on that instead of the soil, so the larvae cannot eat the plants roots. They are fast growing and form smaller heads, ready to harvest in four or five months. They are generally easier to grow successfully than later varieties, especially if harvested before any hot, dry weather. Toilet paper roll tube – once the toilet paper is used up, just take the cardboard cylinder and use it as a cutworm collar. You might be able to cut the roll into two or three collars. However, make sure you make the collars tall enough to deter pests and keep them away from your plants. Fabric roll tube– after a roll of fabric is used up, the leftover cardboard cylinder will give you enough material for many plant collars.
