About this deal

The world’s largest land animal has frequently found its way into English speech. The word ‘jumbo’, meaning large, comes directly from Jumbo the Elephant. Here’s what we mean when we talk about elephants: The first two sets of characters were the Alice in Wonderland range and the Cinderella range of characters. They were designed mainly by Gill Leeper. He was a master wood carver and design artist. His work is very distinctive and is easily recognised by the caricatured, exaggerated and pronounced features such as the Ugly sisters and the Mad Hatter. ( It was rumoured that some of his designs were caricatures of some of the people who worked within the factory!) But it is the elephant that is indisputably the show’s biggest star – as well as its most swaggering diva. The scene I watch in rehearsals has had to be added at the last minute when it emerged that the creature – controlled by a trio of puppeteers – moves with such an unhurried strut that entire new songs would need to be written to allow it to get on and off stage. “You can write all you like, but when you have an actual massive elephant, it totally changes things,” sighs Harris.

These incredibly cute elephant crafts for kids are perfect for all kinds of occasions. From Elmer, Horton and Clay and paper, there’s an elephant craft you will fall in love with! As it turned out, despite their initial popularity with the buyers, they were expensive compared to other standard puppets. Although they looked good, they did not work as well as some other puppets. Some characters from the range did survive beyond 1968 when Bob sold off remaining characters that had poor sales figures through Pelpup News.Color in the puppet. Only color the middle third of the sheet, as other two thirds won’t be seen when the puppet is folded (nothing wrong if you color it all though).

The cast in rehearsals for The Magician’s Elephant (Photo: Manuel Harlan/RSC) In 1811 an elephant named Chunee arrived in England from Bengal and was housed in the Exeter Change in the Strand. He was put onstage at Covent Garden and then the New Pavilion Theatre. In keeping with the history of performing animals, Chunee was badly treated and became dangerous so was destroyed. His mounted skeleton ended up in the Museum of the Royal College of Surgeons. Elephants were once common throughout Africa and Asia, but their populations have significantly declined during the last century, threatened by poaching, habitat loss and conflict. World Elephant Day exists to spread awareness about the critical threats elephants face and to support solutions for their survival. We mark the day by looking at our stage elephant, and the animal's place in our culture.
