About this deal

Damp proofing membranes protect different parts of a structure from damage arising from damp, including mould and mildew, and the risk of rotten timber. If renovating after a pre-existing damp problem, consider installing fresh sawn & carcassing timber to replace rotten stud work and battens.

A variation on the workaround illustrated above. On the left-hand side, a pre-cast concrete edging has been used to create the retainer and the paving is significantly higher than the dpc. A dished channel unit has been used at the base to direct any surface water to the gullies. Although a relatively narrow channel is shown here, these 'dry area' solutions can feature much wider channel, often 600mm or more, and so consideration must be given to safe-guarding the edge to prevent accidental falls. Drained channel arrangement The reveal should be protected throughout its width by a continuous DPC. The width of the DPC should be sufficient to be fixed to, or overlap, the frame and fully protect the reveal. For very severe exposure conditions, rebated reveal construction or a proprietary closer, suitable for the conditions, should be used. The polyethylene foam insulation used in ARC Insulated DPC has a thermal conductivity of 0.039W/mK. Damp proofing membrane is sometimes called DPM for short, or DPC membrane as shorthand for 'damp proof course membrane'. A damp course is not the only method of damp proofing for the home. Our range of damp proof products also includes chimney pots, which can help to keep adverse weather from entering the property via the chimney.

The paving/ground level should always be at least 75mm below the DPC. Anything less than that is just asking for trouble.* If you are looking for a premium quality, DPC to be used in your construction – this is product is perfect. The polyethylene DPC used in the manufacture of ARC Insulated DPC conforms to the requirements of BS6515. Installation should be according to the code of practice CP102:1973 and normal DPC good practice procedures set in BS 5628 should be followed.

This DPC is suitable for masonry walls and has a diamond embossed surface to offer better mortar adhesion. Our metalwork wall & frame ties are ideal for work on cavity walls, to hold everything securely together once your damp course is in place.

A cavity tray should be provided to direct any water that enters the cavity to the outside. The cavity tray should fully protect the opening. Jewson building materials can make sure you have everything you need to not only install a damp proof course, but to complete the job from start to finish. Use of an insulated cavity closer would have prevented these last 2 problems. For more information about preventing cold bridges, refer to our Registered Construction Details.

DPC installation is simplest in the new construction process. For external walls, the DPC should be applied 150mm above the external ground level. You need to ensure it is linked with the DPM in solid floors. Just solid masonry separated by a vertical DPC. This means that this part of the wall will be colder that the rest of the wall, resulting in condensation forming around this part of the structure – a case of ‘cold bridging’. Judging by the standards of workmanship, it’s quite likely that there is no insulation below the DPC either, meaning the same problems will happen around the skirting too. It’s important to think about cold bridging through any part of the structure but especially where junctions occur. Further information The DPC membrane should be applied to a fresh bed of mortar. Make sure that the area is completely free of anything that may puncture the DPC or prevent it from lying flat.

The DPC also features an embossed finish to make mortar adhesion better. How to install a DPC membrane The Building Regulations require at least 150mm between the dpc and the ground or any paving. This is what is known as 'Best Practice'. However, there are situations where it is just not possible, or practical, to maintain this regulation. On professional work, and new build projects, every possible effort should be made to ensure the 150mm rule is not breached, but, for small, domestic projects, such as a driveway or patio, there are cases where keeping the paving to 150mm below dpc would involve a huge amount of work that cannot be justified. In such cases, the 150mm rule can be 'bent' a little, but with the following provisos... A DPC should be provided a minimum 150mm above adjoining surfaces and linked with the DPM in solid floors. A cavity tray should be provided 150mm above any adjoining roof or balcony surface. The tray should be lapped over any roof upstand or flashing to ensure water penetrating into the cavity does not enter the enclosed area.
