About this deal

Right out of the box, the pillow began to take its shape and emitted a slight off-gassing smell from the memory foam pieces in the fill. The brand recommends putting the pillow in the dryer with a dryer sheet to help dissipate the smell. The pillow comes with extra fill, so you can add additional height to your preference. GH Lab pros note that this process can be a bit messy and we found it easier to store the extra fill in a resealable bag for future use. Lab testing:

The Original is Coop Sleep Goods’ best-selling pillow. It is filled with the brand’s proprietary blend of shredded memory foam and microfibers. The quilted cover made of polyester and rayon from bamboo has a zipper allowing owners to adjust the loft by adding or removing the contents. You probably don’t wash your pillow all that often, and that’s just fine—my research indicated that once or twice a year is sufficient. But I tested for durability and ease of cleaning for each pillow just incase. I washed and dried each pillow according to their instructions to see how well they held up, and how difficult they were to clean. The goal was to mimic the wear and tear pillows go through from being slept on night after night, and also to see how easy they were to clean for guests, kids, and if you happen to spill a full cup of coffee on your pillow like I might have a few months ago. A pillow protector keeps your pillow clean for longer, safeguarding it from dust mites, spills, stains and germs in the same way a good mattress protector looks after your mattress. While spills and stains are unsightly and a breeding ground for bacteria, dust mites are the other big problem with unprotected pillows - especially those that aren’t cleaned regularly.Shredded memory foam pillows are made of tiny, shredded pieces of memory foam filling. The pieces of shredded fill makes the shredded memory foam pillow more breathable than a traditional memory foam pillow made with a more dense fill because there is additional room for the air to circulate between the shredded pieces. At Coop Sleep Goods, we cross-cut our foam vs. shredded because it is even better for consistency, non-clumping, and circulation. I’m a journalist with over a decade of experience in the lifestyle, home, and food space, writing and reporting for New York Magazine, Food & Wine and Vox, among others. I’m also a lifelong insomniac, who puts a high premium on quality sleep. I’ve cycled through dozens of pillows looking for the right fit for my own sleep environment. For this piece I consulted with multiple experts, including sleep Washington University Sleep Neurologist Dr. Eric Landsness and John Spears, the general manager and pillow buyer of San Francisco’s Hotel Drisco, where each guest selects from a pillow menu. Additionally, I spoke to Lauren Fountain, Product Expert at the Sleep Foundation and Certified Sleep Science Coach.

All of pillow experts I spoke with recommended an adjustable pillow, and the Coop Pillow was the ... [+] best adjustable pillow I tested. Margaret Eby Depending on the recycling center you visit, the fibers inside pillows can be recycled into clothing, rugs and carpets, cleaning cloths, and other household items. You can take your pillows to a textile recycling facility as long as they aren’t stained with sweat, oil, blood or grease. Pillows aren’t usually accepted in curbside recycling bins, so you’ll need to visit a textile recycling center. When recycled, pillows are broken down into their separate components, with the material shredded or ground up for reuse in another item. Coop Sleep Goods pillows are a great choice for sleepers whose loft preferences vary throughout the night. The fill can easily be removed or added, and Coop Sleep Goods sells the shredded foam/microfiber material in bulk for those who need a refill. The best camping pillows are those that you look forward to climbing into your sleeping bag with – not those that you want to hurl into the woods after your first night’s kip. This is often easier said than done – but by carefully choosing your next sleep companion, you too can experience the elusive comfortable camping pillow.Camping pillows can become wet or damp for a number of reasons. Sure, the tent could flood and your sleeping gear ruined – but it’s much more likely that condensation will be the real challenge. A standard home pillow will become damp and likely stay that way for the trip if condensation makes its way in – ruining any chance of a comfortable sleep.

Ideally, a pillow stays cool even when you aren’t, and rapidly cools once you take your head off it. In my testing, the Coop Pillow was one of the best pillows at releasing heat and humidity. The humidity meter read just 38.6% humidity on the pillow’s surface, while the ambient humidity of the room I was testing in was 43%.

Lab analysts wash the Coop Home Goods Original Pillow fill and cover separately in the washing machine five times before giving final comments on shrinkage and changes in appearance. Emma Seymour Tester notes: Our bed pillow, The Eden, is constructed from the inside out to provide cooling comfort. Our blend consists of cooling gel infused memory foam and microfiber. If you are a hot sleeper, stop flipping and fluffing throughout the night and consider The Eden for a real relaxing rest. A sleeper’s experience with a pillow often depends on his or her body weight and preferred sleep position. But not all travel pillows are created equally. Some are made from what can only be described as hot water bottle offcuts. Sure they’re inflatable, but they’re so uncomfortable that you just end up balling up your fleece in replacement. We popped our Coop Home Goods pillow in the dryer first to fluff it (Image credit: Coop Home Goods) At the other end of the spectrum, there are the non-inflatable camping pillows. Now, these do take up a lot of space compared to the inflatable options, but what they take in space they make up for in comfort. These are much more similar to the typical bed pillows that you’re used to at home, only a little more substantial to deal with condensation etc. Side sleepers– Look for a pillow with high loft and firm support to relieve pressure at the shoulder and help maintain a neutral spine position. Adjustable pillows with fluffable materials will also help you adjust the shape more easily to suit your position.
