I realise that that kind of means that I saw it as forgettable but please bear in mind it was about thirteen years ago and I have a horrible memory for books. Seriously, I can forget my favourite books that I’ve only just put down and that doesn’t mean that I don’t love them. I just have a shoddy memory. Skellig him(it)self was another victory for Almond. Skellig could easily have been misused. Too much Skellig and the book would have been a fraction as good as it was. Too little Skellig and what would be the point. And if Almond had chosen to tell us everything about Skellig, to spoon feed us Skellig's "truth," I might have been moved to toss the book on the barbecue. But no, the amount of Skellig was perfect.

This book may be suitable for children that are 10 or above, adults or more mature audience.David Almond writes his characters so well. They all feel real, and deep. Even though we don’t spend too much time with some of them, it really didn’t take much imagination to feel like I knew them. On a bit of a side note, one thing that can make or break a story for me is dialogue. Bad dialogue, no matter how good a story is, has me nope-ing out so hard. Skellig is a masterclass in how to write dialogue. It just feels real.

The story is fresh and engaging and will have children leaving behind their games consoles in favor of an adventure. In the meanwhile, Michael's baby sister takes a turn for the worse and his parents are informed that she needs a heart operation if she is to live. His parents are distraught, and Michael realises that he too really cares for and loves his sister. The baby is taken to hospital and Michael imagines her heart beat and his intertwined. I rate this book 5 stars for its stellar plot, its intriguing characters and a hint of the supernatural.HAY LIBROS PREDESTINADOS A SER ESCRITOS. At first Michael thinks he's imagining the man, but soon the man talks, and Michael can see that he's in a lot of pain. "Arthur Itis" is what the man calls it. Michael puts his own troubles aside to care for the man, feeding him left over Chinese takeaway - #27 and #53, ale and aspirin.

Skellig is an emotive tale revolving around strong themes of nurture, the value of friendship, trust and love (to name but a few). The story centres around a 10-year old boy named Michael and the unique discovery he stumbles upon after entering a forbidden garage in his garden. The interesting point to note, regarding the creature that Michael discovers and which Almond does very well, is that we as readers never get a direct label for Michael’s discovery. We simply know him as “Skellig”. The clues we are given in the text are that Skellig is crippled with Arthritis; has lived on a diet of insects and spiders and is surrounded by owl pellets. Skellig continues to recite numbers from a Chinese takeaway and later in the tale we discover, through Michael, that Skellig has wings. I also remember how quiet this story is, and how it’s poignant and beautiful and occasionally uncomfortable to read. And I remember that joyous ending. And I also remember how I wished I had friends I could communicate with using an owl call. “Hoot. Hoot hoot hoot.” And I remember Whisper and how much I used to want a cat just like him.The book is well written using easy to interpret language and would definitely be suitable for children aged 9+. It is an excellent book to share with your children as it covers many topics in a way that make them easier to talk about. The book is very mystical and slightly unnerving as you never get to find out exactly what Skellig is although it is hinted he is some kind of angel. However, he is not what people might assume a conventional angel. He is in a shabby dirty suit, staying alive by eating spiders when Michael finds him and instead of being religious and saintly keeps asking Michael to bring him beer and Chinese food. The book also contains vivid descriptions so even though you may never know what Skellig is you know exactly what he looks like.
