About this deal

DHC’s Olive Virgin Oil Essential Cream works wonders on dry and dehydrated skin. Made with olive oil, the rich moisturizer isn’t great for every skin type. (Oil-based moisturizers aren’t ideal for oily skin, King says.) But it’s great at combating dryness. Within 15 minutes, the moisturizer made our dry skin feel hydrated and dewy. It even seemed to fill in fine lines, giving our skin a plumper, almost-retouched look.

We tested 64 face moisturizers for dry and oily skin. But some lost points in one or more key categories, so they didn’t earn a spot among our favorites. These five didn’t make the final cut, but there were things we liked about them: We also like that this top-notch moisturizer is budget-friendly. And since a little goes a long way, the 1.5-ounce tub of cream should last you a while. Also suitable for patients undergoing cancer treatment. Helps moisturise and comfort sensitive skin. Multiple observation studies on over 650 patients. Certain active ingredients can also make a big difference in the effectiveness of a skincare formula on acne. Dr. Litani recommends looking for ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and even retinol to target and treat acne. Because the moisturizer is so rich, we wouldn’t recommend it for oily skin. But it’s great for other skin types, like dry and combination skin. The 1.68-ounce moisturizer feels a little bit expensive. But since it does the work of three products, it’s easy to justify the buy.

When testing out this face oil on acne-prone skin, we were impressed with the results: Although not leaving us with a dewy glow like some other face oils provide, it offered must-needed hydration along with oil-balancing effects. In addition to integrating this into our skincare routine, we also loved using this face oil to prep the skin for dermaplaning as it helped provide a super clean shave while removing dead skin cells — just be sure to avoid any blemishes if you choose to use it for this reason. If acne-prone and oily skin are your concern, La Roche-Posay’s Effaclar range effectively targets imperfections and excess shine. Charged with salicylic acid, a blemish-busting BHA, the line-up of products works to micro-exfoliate the skin, buffing away decongestion and build-up on the skin’s surface. Ceramides are naturally occurring in the skin and mimic the natural components in skin, making them super effective. There are a few different types of ceramides, but they work pretty much the same to restore lipid (moisture) levels and support healthy skin barrier function. and below: We don't recommend face moisturizers with this rating; you won't find any on our list. We Also Tested People with oily, acne-prone skin sometimes fear moisturizers, thinking they could worsen breakouts. Excessive oiliness is often caused by dehydrated skin, so using a moisturizer with humectants can help balance moisture levels. “This is a great choice for acne-prone skin,” Dr. Klein says, noting that the gel-cream formula is lightweight and won’t add shine to oily skin types. Reishi mushroom extract also helps soothe and reduce redness, adds Dr. Klein. Pimples, excess oil, uncomfortable cystic acne — these are some of the most common reactions of acne-prone skin. And while the effects of acne might start with the physical, they can also take a toll on our emotions, too.

to 4.7 stars: These face moisturizers are excellent—they might have minor flaws, but we still recommend them. First Aid Beauty’s Ultra Repair Cream did a great job hydrating our skin, boosting our moisture levels by 11 to 31 percent. But it felt heavy and greasy—more like a night cream than an everyday moisturizer. Our only issue with this product? It’s not cruelty-free. And we know that for many people, that’s not just a downside—it’s a dealbreaker.

A moisturizer is generally the last step of most skin care routines since its job is to seal in moisture. However, there are some exceptions. During the daytime, you can use a moisturizer after cleansing but before applying sunscreen. The La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer UV SPF 30 contains sunscreen, so it would be the final step in your daytime routine. In the evening, you can apply facial oils after moisturizing with ceramides.

Then I Met You’s Renewing Rich Beauty Cream relies on all-natural hydrators, like ginseng, squalane, baobab, and hyaluronic acid. And it delivers results. Our skin was noticeably more hydrated just 15 minutes after applying the cream. And the driest parts of our face (our forehead and chin) saw the biggest difference: The cream boosted moisture by 36 to 47 percent.
