About this deal

Through Palin’s effort and words we see more than just a tourist’s overview and box ticking exercise like a modern ISpy book. If you're in the UK there is a Channel 5 3-part docuseries accompanying this book so it makes it even more immersive. His books include accounts of his journeys, novels ( Hemingway’s Chair and The Truth) and several volumes of diaries.

And he considers the role that Iraq’s other great natural resource – oil – plays in both providing wealth and threatening political stability. Marked down by the BBC for not being trendy enough, it looked the end of a spectacular era of travel documentaries. Genial and comforting whilst containing his signature wit and necessary depth and critique when needed. The journey starts in a snowy lake in Turkish ‘Kurdestan’ and follows the Tigris - with some digressions west to its sister river, the Euphrates - to the Persian Gulf. Always a joy to join Palin on another travel, even when it's one that is shorter than previous epics (he is almost 80 now), and one that has a more sombre tone thanks to the war riven background to Iraq. Having said that I really enjoyed the book and when I started it was difficult to put down, the urge to just read another chapter was always there and as each chapter was a days journey it felt even more like a diary and you felt you were progressing down Iraq along with the small team making the films.

Palin was always good interacting with locals in previous documentaries and whilst I haven’t yet seen the TV series that this book accompanies, that is only three sixty minute episodes and those include adverts so I doubt you get much more insight. Please Note: By their very nature, all signed books will have been handled several times before they get to you. The book is quite short, just 171 pages and a lot of those have half and half text and photographs of the trip, I therefore read it in about two and a half hours. I know almost nothing about Iraq as a country so this was interesting and devastating to see that so much of it has not recovered from the war. I doubt I'll get there unless either, the country becomes completely "normal" or I have Palin's pedigree.

His journeys have taken him across the world, the North and South Poles, the Sahara desert, the Himalayas and most recently, Eastern Europe. In March 2022, Michael Palin travelled the length of the River Tigris through Iraq to get a sense of what life is like in a region of the world that once formed the cradle of civilisation, but that in recent times has witnessed turmoil and appalling bloodshed. I can't believe I didn't think about Michael at all during the pandemic, all cooped up and unable to visit new places, eat new dishes, and meet new people. For me the real insights of travel are in the details – faces glimpsed, sounds caught on the wind, tastes of dishes you’ve never eaten before, words exchanged over a mug of sweet tea, the shocks and surprises round every corner.

But then in 2018, heh teamed up with Channel 5 with a headline-grabbing trip to North Korea, and in 2022, aged 79, it was off to Iraq. His ability to bring his travels to life with a casual observation, of curious conversation, have not dimmed during COVID. In a 2005 poll to find The Comedian's Comedian, he was voted the 30th favourite by fellow comedians and comedy insiders.Palin follows the Tigris from source to mouth; beginning in Turkey and ending in the tiny strip of Iraqi coastline sandwiched between Kuwait and Iran. I was left feeling somewhat sad for the people and their future, but maybe part of the melancholy was for Palin himself, and the end of an era. At the next he would be visiting the war-torn city of Mosul, or learning about the horrific Speicher massacre in Tikrit.

He is respectful of the country and its people and displays curiosity mingled with non-judgmental gentleness which is rare, I think. His books include accounts of his journeys, novels ( Hemingway's Chair and The Truth) and several volumes of diaries. Come down the travelators, exit Sainsbury's, turn right and follow the pedestrianised walkway to Crown Walk and turn right - and Coles will be right in front of you.
