Longer isn't always better but in an extended format a book tends to have more than a passing interest. He claims to have absolutely no idea what he's doing with his love life when in reality its down to him making asinine choices and then not being able to own up to them. The story is set in the vicinity of Manchester, England, although the author has created a fictitious smaller town where the events unfold.

It may be quite realistic; they are both married to the job, but it makes me want to shake them both! But for those whose idea of British literature is what's used by Jane Austen it creates a certain amount of confusion -- but a lot of local color. But it has a compelling plot and a villain whose psychology is horribly believable -- having been rejected by the woman he idolizes, he seeks out others who resemble her and tries to get them to "be" her, and when they can't measure up to his exacting standards he punishes them, eventually torturing and killing them.Again we have descriptions of torture and gore but for me this didn’t detract from my listening experience. Soon, another decomposed body of a young woman is found in a hearse – mouth sewn shut and a tag on the earlobe. The investigation begins when the body of a young American student is found in the backseat of a car during a large road accident, but it quickly comes to light that this was not how the young woman met her death. A good detective story that moves on at a reasonably fast pace that involves a man with fanatical emotions towards a woman that he loves and idolises but which are not reciprocal. This is a totally gripping twisty turny book with plenty going on: an abducted child, murder of a witness and the dead/missing young women.

Also available are four books in the 'DI Greco' series - Dark Murder, Dark Houses, Dark Trade, and the latest - Dark Angel. He has starred in Doctor Who, played the Angel of Death in Hellboy II and is an award-winning reader who has recorded over 100 audiobooks. I was confused by the preamble which had reference to the USA, but this all made sense as the novel progressed.Don't be put off by the fact that it is a series of books as it works perfectly as a stand alone thriller.

All this and a missing child and mysterious, horribly tortured body found at the scene of an auto accident.Lydia is just slutty and Jones is a cheap-skate, too concerned with saving money than solving crimes. There are small descriptions of what the killer did to his victims but I’m so glad the readers didn’t have to be a part of it. While I enjoyed this book and I think it was not quite as strong as the first, it wasn't enough to deduct a star. However, the characterisation of some of the main characters continues to irritate me either through their dialogue (which can be incredulous in places), their actions (particularly those of the Chief Superintendent) or their continuous angst relating to their personal love lives (especially when bearing in mind how old they are supposed to be).
