About this deal

THE best-selling Glaswegian author, of one of last year’s most outrageously funny books, is appearing at a literary event in the city next month.

A group of us are all reading this at the moment as part of our newly formed and made up book club and honestly we couldn’t have chosen a better book to start with… this is serious belly laugh, snort out loud material… we can’t put it down! Was buzzing to read this given I could identify with the location and I wanted to support local talent.

Step into the love shack with Sophie as she dishes out dating disasters, romance gone wrong, and so much more, all served with a side-splitting dose of cringe as well as humour! I’m meeting Sophie Gravia, the young author of what might turn out to be one of the defining literary works of Scotland’s collective lockdown experience. Perhaps the most startling is that Sophie wrote the book while juggling the demands of being a full-time nurse in a busy Glasgow hospital during lockdown with the responsibilities of being a single mother to two children. This being The Herald, I’ve chosen the comparatively subdued aftermath of one of Zara’s bedtime rendezvous which she discusses with her friend, Ashley. As a character Zara is easily relatable with her trials and tribulations of finding a suitable man in our generation where most dating appears to happen based off a swipe left or right. Omg this book was so good i have never laughed so hard in my life 😂 Zara is so funny and every situation she gets herself into is class.

There are a few minor grammar issues, and the continual fish references were a bit off-putting, but A Glasgow Kiss is a thoroughly enjoyable read that I fully recommend. Anchored by Sophie, she’s bringing the sass and spilling the tea on real-life experiences that have inspired her hilarious stories. Her blog exposes bizarre, questionable and downright unforgettable dating experiences, both from Sophie and followers. DNF - I read over 100 pages and Zara constantly speaks negatively of herself and gets obsessed over toxic relationships that leave you uncomfortable. I’m not sure I would categorise A Glasgow Kiss as a romance, purely due to the severe lack of “romantic men” that poor Zara (and possibly Sophie) dated however there’s an underlying strong tale of friendship and inoffensive sex scenes a plenty, although not in a Jilly Cooper or 50 shades manner but more of a “oh my god do men actually do that to bodysuits? I feel bad giving this such a low rating, I did find this book a really easy read and I enjoyed reading a romance set in Glasgow and featuring places I know.

This is something that definitely needs more representation in current books because most books follow the perfect main character and Zara does not feel like the perfect main character. I must firstly apologise for the amount of time it has taken me to provide a review of this book, my health was rather bad for quite some time, something that had me in hospital on numerous occasions and simply didnt leave me with the time I once had to do what I love most. With competition ramping up in Glasgow, Zara and her friends at Individualise can't pass up an opportunity to promote their aesthetics clinic - especially not when it involves an all-expenses-paid quick getaway to Dubai!I loved this book but it was a little cringe for me in some scenes which is why I have rated it 3 stars. I loved the main characters clumsy, loveable and hilarious traits and the events she got herself into had me in stitches! A headbutt or a strike with the head to someone’s sensitive areaMeet Zara Smith: 29, single and muddling her way through life as a trainee nurse in Glasgow.
