About this deal

The gravestone was quite severely weathered partially with moss but mainly dirt and grime and its come up brilliantly. Below is a pH scale that gives pH balances for the cleaners we can recommend based on the best information we have been able to collect at the present time. How many headstones can be cleaned using this set, assuming an average size headstone with two applications each?

pH values are very important in determining the severity of any given cleaner that is applied to a grave marker as well as to your health and safety. I didn’t use the entire gallon – I estimate that I used about a ½ cup of D2 solution + ½ cup of water mixed together for each stone if they weren’t terribly dirty. D/2 has been successfully used to remove staining from a variety of surfaces including natural stones such as marble, granite, limestone, sandstone, slate; masonry surfaces such as brick and cast stone; concrete; wood; aluminum and vinyl siding; and canvas.

This cleaner is in the top two most recognized and recommended biocides among cemetery conservators and people in the field of stone preservation. For sure value for money, if you could get a 'professional' out, they would do the same job, probably use similar chemical and of course charge my poor mother a fortune. For example, pH 10 is ten times more alkaline than pH 9 and 100 times (10 times 10) more alkaline than pH 8.

No, I didn’t get the stones as clean as they could be, but I removed the worst grime, so that months from now, the D/2 can continue to reactivate with every rain and snow event, restoring the stones back to their original color. The Pope-Leighey House "Usonian" house was developed by Wright as a means of providing affordable housing for people of moderate means. A contact time of 10 to 15 minutes followed by scrubbing with a soft brush will loosen most biological and air pollutant staining. Use a non abrasive to gently agitate the area using a circular motion to lift the contamination from the surface. You can truly use the D/2 “hands-free” method of cleaning, and it certainly won’t harm anything…and the stone will always be cleaner.

I learned about D/2 from an article about a man who spends weekends cleaning old headstones, and that led me to LimeWorks. It’s incredible to see the original color of some stones – once you remove the dirt, the colors can be bright and gorgeous, revealing details not seen in decades or centuries! D/2 Biological Solution is specially formulated to remove environmental pollution, dirt, and staining from biological soils such as mold, mildew, lichen, and algae from indoor and outdoor structures. Microbiologists at Harvard’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences evaluated the microorganisms originally on the stone including bacteria, fungi, and algae.

What do you suggest if you don’t want the grave marker to be so white after cleaning/time - dilute it? At least, if it’s cleaned even once, you get your historical info and don’t ever need to clean it again unless you want to.In the field, NCPTT evaluated cleaners on stones located at five different climates and in both sunny and shady environments. D/2 has been used since 1995 to clean historic masonry buildings, World Heritage Sites, and important monuments around the world, including iconic sites such as The White House, The Alamo, The New York Public Library, The city walls of San Juan, Puerto Rico, The Tomb Of The Unknowns, Washington Monument, plus many more. Because of this, they are considered to be non denaturing and are great for processes where keeping protein structure intact is important. Yes, D/2 can be used on historic bricks as long as the staining is due to biological activity such as mold, algae, mildew, etc. I was running low on solution and time, so I decided to just spray what was left on my husband’s grandparents’ headstones.

Use the tampico brush to lift up the hardest of bio-materials, scrubbing lightly in a circular motion (don’t use a brush if you have a granular stone! No need to use a lot, just enough to see the surfactant bubble on the surface, meaning it’s enough to adhere to the surface of the monument.

My rule of thumb for which brush to use: if you wouldn’t use it on your body, don’t use it on a gravestone! Wait about 3-5 minutes, take another DURING photo of the headstone – you may find the bio-materials on the stone turn it pink, red, orange, yellow, green – the possibilities are endless because the biological growth could be anything, and applying any biocide is likely to cause strange coloring with “die off”. Sodium lauryl sulfate is a “surfactant” – it removes stains and residues that are oily, so it’s found as an ingredient in lots of surface cleaners. The cleaners needed to be effective in improving the appearance of the headstone and do no harm to the marble.
