About this deal

Ann Widdecombe, a former Tory Home Office minister with the reputation of having a heart of stone, took to writing novels from 2000. Sean and Alice start a new life in Chicago and the mystery of Father James's death begins to unravel. But Maura's condemnation wouldn't stop her sending over a warm batch of floury potato bread, known as Boxty, as an act of commiseration when she made her own the following morning, using flour that was itself stolen from a bag that had fallen off the back of a ship in the dock. I enjoyed this book, and will carry on to read the others in the series, but I didn't rush onto the 2nd one, I felt I needed a break in between continuing the story.

A good example of my point is Nurse Antrobus, we are introduced to her briefly midway through the book, when she smacks a panicking child and uses a fairly rude phrase "bogjumper" to describe her because her family is Irish. That’s all I have to say as I’m off to read the follow up from this novel as it is a good read, even if the circumstances within the story have some sadness or parts that make you angry of how life was in this era. You can almost excuse the fairly graphic descriptions in Lovely Lane, it's set in a hospital and community in the 1950s around a community that still faces things including signs saying No Irish, you don't go into it expecting to read about unicorns and rainbows. I listened to it over a 24 hour period, every chance I could, I couldn't leave it alone, I will have to not listen for a while so I hopefully forget some of the story first, it was really vivid and very well read. Maura was thin, taller than Tommy by a good two inches and, as Tommy often joked, her almost-black hair and eyes were proof that her granny had lain with a tinker: a joke that often resulted in Tommy being chased around the kitchen with a wet dishcloth.

All are living in slums of the post war city, trying their best to keep mind, body and soul together. The degree of their whiteness and cleanliness invited verbal judgment to be passed upon the woman responsible. Aha, Jerry thought, seeing an opportunity in the girl's problem, thank ye Lord, a hundred thousand times, for here's me chance. Full details of your rights under the Distance Selling Regulations are available in the UK from your local Citizens' Advice Bureau or your Local Authority's Trading Standards Office. In this book they apparently have 7 children, but in the Lovely Lane book 4 the characters with the same name appear to have 4 and they seem to be a lot younger.Dorries describes the books as "a mishmash of the people, personalities and events which were the backcloth to my life when growing up in Liverpool". It’s just that there’s a right way and a wrong way in The Four Streets, and the wrong way is anything involving a chemist and the right way is highly mysterious. It's the story of a Liverpool docker and his family, and of the community in which they live – predominantly of Irish extraction, with roots and extended family over the water. Maura liked to travel, sometimes managing the whole mile and a half into Liverpool city centre, known to everyone as 'town'.
