About this deal

You want to use a paint with a different base than that of the primer. For example, use an oil-based primer with a latex paint to take advantage of the rot resistance of the oil primer and the lower VOCs and faster drying of the latex paint. We typically start by cutting in up in the corner where the wall meets the ceiling. Since we are going to be applying the primer on the ceiling too, we don’t necessarily need to get a nice straight line up there. We just need to get the primer into the corner where the paint roller may not reach. Drywall: Apply a latex primer to drywall, as an oil-based primer can raise the grain and make the surface look uneven.

To do this, you can wash the mold or mildew area with a mildew remover (or bleach) and then rinse well with water and allow it to dry FULLY before priming. Make sure that the primer soaks into your substrate and doesn't form puddles, as these can skim over. How long should primer dry before tiling? Next move on to priming the walls! Bring your paint roller up to the wall and make a large W on the wall for the initial pass. Continue to roll the paint roller over the wall working in small 4′ sections overlapping the passes. All surfaces must be clean, free of dust, chalk, oil, grease, wax, polish, mold and mildew, loose peeling paint, rust and all other foreign substances. In contrast to Zinsser Cover Stain, another oil-based wood paneling primer from my list, this product emits less odor. Besides, thanks to the fast odor dissipation technology, you will notice no lingering smells that may cause headaches or other discomfort. Despite this, I still recommend ventilating the room because this product is not completely odorless.Use a small foam roller or paint brush to apply a thin coat of primer to your substrate. Take care not to over-apply primer, as this can increase drying times Kilz 3 Premium interior/exterior primer is formulated to minimize problems caused by color changes, minor stains, surface textures, and porosity differences. This primer offers excellent adhesion, a mildew-resistant coating, and seals interior and exterior surfaces for a uniform finish. Meet the Tester Bare wood: Apply an oil-based or latex primer to wood that has never been stained or painted to help seal the porous surface. Keep in mind that oil-based primers tend to emit more VOCs (smelly pollutants) than do latex primers. Water-based primer is best for walls and ceilings. Oil-based primer is primarily used for doors, windows, metal, woodwork, or over tough stains in well-ventilated areas. Q. Which is better: primer or paint with primer?

Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint is the brand’s paint-and-primer combo available in interior and exterior formulations. The interior version is designed for one coat coverage on drywall, trim, and ceilings. SuperPaint creates a lasting finish and a surface that holds up to scrubbing. Water, mold, and rust stains are tough to cover, but odors are even harder to conceal. Smoke, pet urine, and food odors often require using an oil-based or shellac-based primer to seal them into the surface before painting. However, Kilz Restoration interior primer offers the same performance as oil-based primers but with the easy cleanup convenience of water-based paint. You’re repainting a previously painted surface in the same color or going from a lighter to a darker paint color. Painted wood: An oil-based primer is usually best for painted wood that shows chalking (a chalky powder on the surface as the paint binder degrades) or chipping; it will dry into a denser, smoother foundation to minimize these imperfections. The primer is low odor, low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and provides excellent coverage on interior and exterior surfaces. It’s made from water-based acrylic and is designed to resist blistering, peeling, and mold and mildew growth. The primer is tintable and available in white or gray. It’s also available in spray-paint form.
