The Sleuth is manufactured with a suede leather upper which provides good breathability for more moderate riding but is less breathable than other shoes with more synthetic and highly breathable uppers.

Shoelaces are a pretty minor complaint, and you can easily swap the included laces for a more durable option. To clarify, the upper is slightly stiffer around the toe area for sure, but still very soft in comparison to the toe area of Five Ten’s TrailCross Gore-Tex Shoes, Specialized’s 2FO Roost Shoes, and Endura’s MT500 Burner Shoes. While I can’t objectively say that the Powerline’s D30 inserts at the ankle were noticeably more protective than a non-D30 material (mostly cause the other shoes I use are all low-cut), I’ve learned to trust that material in other products. The Shift has a silhouette that will look very familiar to those who like to roll around on decks with four wheels, with a cotton upper, vulcanized rubber sole, and a literal bike-chain tread pattern. Most clipped in riders will be fine with the regular Hellcat but pros and racers looking for all the margincal gains they can get, the Hellcat Pros will see you very well.
