About this deal

A particular highlight was DS Bryant's dissection of solving a crime into the different courses of a meal and the witty repartee between Kim and droll pathologist, Doctor Keats. If you don’t show all of this, but you just give me the conclusion (because the detective deduces things outside the book), how can I feel the story? We begin with a creepy prologue where five people have jointly dug a grave for someone and have agreed to keep it secret.

I’ve adapted my original review just a little but I do believe that first impressions count and my first impression of Silent Scream led to me giving it a mahoosive thumbs up.As well as the activity surrounding the current murders of those connected by their former employment at the children's home, the discoveries of human remains long buried on the site alerts Kim that this could be the work of two separate and very depraved killers. It’s like taking a cooking class where they give you cooked food instead of teaching you how to cook it. There are 3 instances in the novel (chapter 20, chapter 66 and one other section) that actually gave me chills and goosebumps, they were so terrifyingly sick. To be honest, I do find it hard to criticise the character of Kim as I recognise a lot of her traits in myself, and as such, with the way she is portrayed on the page, I have to say she is a truly well developed and observed character indeed.

As the story progressed, my interest did not flag for one moment, and the last 15% of the book was crazy good! After years of writing relationship based stories (The Forgotten Woman and Dear Mother) Angela turned to Crime, fictionally speaking of course, and developed a character that refused to go away. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. So, I am doubly impressed by how well the plot is crafted, with the well timed pacing, and how the author made this jaded reader gasp out loud on more than one occasion. Her inspiration is derived from the memory of the death of her twin at the age of six and the feeling of failure as she watched his life extinguished. A permit is granted to excavate a field beside an old children's home, leading to human remains being discovered and old employees suddenly picked off one by one. Silent Scream then cuts to the present day and a series of macabre killings, beginning with highly respected headmistress, Teresa Wyatt. Also, there is something Kim does right at the end of this book that will have even a greater impact if you read First Blood first.
