During this period he worked with Nick Butterworth, a fellow children’s author, from whom he learned design and typography.

When Kipper identifies the culprit he thinks his troubles are over - but in actual fact they are only just beginning! In 1989 The Blue Balloon was published to great acclaim, and established him as an important and original voice in children’s picture books. Part of the popular Kipper series, this story is a big hit in EYFS and one with plenty of parts that children love to join in with. Via a series of counting tasks he is able to work out that a couple of additional friends may have just come to visit. In 'Kipper's Toybox' our lovable dog protagonist is busy counting his soft toys in to his toybox before bedtime.

Though the text is simplified, it’s still beyond the board-book audience, and the illustrations deserve full-size books. Kind Kipper ends up sharing his toy box with the mouse, as it is very cosy on the inside with all the toys.Teach them how to be a night-owning girl like you” are as much an appeal for her to love and appreciate her dark skin as they are the exhortation for Amani to enjoy the night. Reread this story with some of the children in the local nursery class, and they absolutely loved it.

Kipper will let you see the character from the start, or more doggy antics can be found in I Don't Want a Posh Dog by Emma Dodd. When Kipper identifies the culprit he thinks his troubles are over - but in actual fact they are only just beginning. The simplified text tells the story of the beautiful princess sent to the forest by her wicked stepmother to be “done away with,” the dwarves that take her in, and, eventually, the happily-ever-after ending.
