This is directly controlled - the knob on the back and one on the right side each drive a segment of the arm. If kids want to dig in Lego, they've probably got a box full of parts to dig in that'll work much better than a few pieces included here. You've already got the mini-LA to adjust the boom angle, and then use the second knob to drive a spool of string.having limited experience with this theme the "knee jerk" reaction is to look a the colors and simply go ("YUK" you should change the color) I can certainly imagine the frustration at having to explain this every time. Colour coding to easily find the little piece with the right function is understandable for the same reason but I wouldn't mind to spend a little bit more time to have a better looking model in the end.
