Since the novel was published, people have been trying to recreate the main characters' adventurous journey. Arriving in Battle Mountain, the captive's cronies try to rescue him but are thwarted by Abigail riding her horse into the saloon and shooting two of the criminals. It inspired people to easily set a schedule, book tickets and travel around the world, which wasn’t common during the Victorian era. Another musical version, 80 Days, with songs by Ray Davies of the Kinks and a book by playwright Snoo Wilson, directed by Des McAnuff, ran at the Mandell Weiss Theatre in San Diego from 23 August to 9 October 1988, receiving mixed responses from the critics. The final leg of the sea journey from 'New York' to 'Liverpool', with the Henrietta slowly dismantled to feed its own furnace, was filmed offshore at Newport Beach, just south of Los Angeles.

When he arrived in San Francisco, he would have noticed that the local date was one day earlier than shown in his travel diary. As the Oakland Bay Bridge had yet to be built, Fogg's carriage may have headed down south to San Jose, and later headed back up north towards Oakland, where he would have caught the train. Here, Fogg learns that the Daily Telegraph article was wrong—the railroad ends at Kholby and starts again 50 miles further on at Allahabad.

It was thus that, when, one day in a Paris café, I read in the Siècle that a man could travel around the world in 80 days, it immediately struck me that I could profit by a difference of meridian and make my traveller gain or lose a day in his journey. Michael Palin, famous from Monty Python, completed the journey in 1988 for a BBC TV series, and an accompanying book. During this journey, they encounter a number of obstacles such as a massive herd of bison crossing the tracks, a failing suspension bridge, the train being attacked by Sioux warriors, uncoupling the locomotive from the carriages and Passepartout being kidnapped by the Indians (but Fogg rescues him). Together with illustrations including historic maps, drawings and statistics, the book features an essay by Jens Hoffmann, ICA Director of Exhibitions.Since she is drugged with opium and hashish and is not going voluntarily, the travellers decide to rescue her.
