About this deal

A lot of this seems to be included for shock value, without much understanding of how psychiatric institutions actually operate. Farquhar, who is either the most brilliant of experimental criminal psychiatrists or a homicidal maniac now running the English madhouse laughably known as Fairfields. Mindgame is penned by Anthony Horowitz, whose recent theatre credits include Dinner with Saddam at the Menier Chocolate Factory, starring Steven Berkoff. Perhaps because Styler has been thrown off-stride by the slutty getup worn by Nurse Plimpton (Kathleen McNenny, in the Barbara Steele role), he fails to convince the eccentric psychiatrist that his literary intentions are honorable.

All of the narrative is in the form of a play script but the author also lets us in on things that the more observant audience member may see on set.It delves into the darkest psyche of the human condition of sociopaths and their dissociative behaviour. Anthony Horowitz is best known for such television programmes as Poirot, Murder Most Horrid, and Midsomer Murders - for wich he has written many episodes. A truly gripping thriller [that] keeps you guessing and marveling from its deceptively normal opening to its fearful climax. Recently revived in 2016 as part of the Theatre Royal Nottingham’s thriller season, Mindgame later embarked on a limited national tour.I may not like the play, but the popular press didn't mind it too much, except for NICHOLAS DE JONGH of THE EVENING STANDARD who says, "When it came to suffering, the real, hard work was done by an audience condemned to watch this strident, silly piffle. It is a short book but it gets over some of my complaints about short books as I had no problem at all picturing the actors on the described stage and it certainly creates an atmosphere.

CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAGH liked the play describing it as an "Highly entertaining schlock-horror show. The story itself is well conceived and is very cleverly written ( as we would expect from Mr Horowitz).Another run of performances took place at the Ambassadors Theatre in London in 2018, following a UK tour. An original thriller, Magpie Murders was published last year and got some of the best reviews I've had. Farquhar and directed by Ken Russell, who made his New York City directorial debut with the production. However, there were a few scenes that were both disturbing and shocking, but these were mainly acts of violence upon another, that would disturb and shock any decent person.
