It probably goes without saying, but I will place a warning here for any readers on the fence about the book.What I really struggled with while reading this book was the inclusion of random storylines as well as the excessive - and mostly pointless - details that made the book way longer than it needed to be.

Starting the book, the meeting and growing bonds of partnership between Bucky and Lee are a rollercoaster of crime, brutality and love. Short kept a scrapbook of dozens of men she dated, most of whom insisted they never had sex with her (because this is one of the questions cops want to know, too, about a dead beautiful girl).Also for the novice to avoid disappointment, the experienced grower who just wants to do a little bit better and those who just like a good read about the wonderful world of the dahlia.

The Book of Dahlia" does not go gently into that good night -- each line howls with pain and rage and laughter. The way the author allows the main character to manage this experience which slams her out of what little control she felt as if she might have had like a car speeding over an unforeseen patch of ice. As the pages run out without this resolve, the book becomes a study on how life doesn't always wrap up into neat little packages. And either that's meaningful all the time or it's meaningful none of the time, shmuck; no qualifying. Erin and her team have splendidly illustrated the techniques for attaining and then arranging these bountiful blooms. However, because Dahlia is the narrator (at least, this is what I felt when reading the book) we're left to question the authenticity of the narrative. The author also over-used police jargon which only made it harder for me to connect with the characters. Dirty cops, women seen as skirts, corruption and sometimes just pure stupidity threads throughout this book. In the story everyone's lives were touched or ruined by the victim of the crime, the Black Dahlia, whether she was known to them personally or not.Looking back, I know that the man possessed no gift of prophecy; he simply worked to assure his own future, while I skated uncertainly toward mine. Full of expert wisdom and overflowing with hundreds of breathtaking images, Discovering Dahlias is an essential resource and must-have book for anyone who loves flowers.
