There have been a fair number of releases of Undercurrent on vinyl over the years, but Pure Pleasure’s 180 gram audiophile incarnation is the first to combine notably high quality sound with packaging that does justice to the eerie, enigmatic beauty of the original. Note that the DOL cover is not black and white but has a blue tint, as in the Blue Note reissue of 1988, but with no lettering. While Evans managed to sit down for a few one-off takes between LaFaro's passing and these April-May 1962 dates, he largely remained on hiatus and abstained from recording. The still strikingly modern looking cover uses the image of “A model floating in the water at Weeki Wachee Spring, Florida. They were part of a circle of musicians in New York in the early sixties, centred on George Russell, and including Jimmy Giuffre and Gil Evans, all united in a common aesthetic. I also love "Skating In Central Park" which sways along with gently caressed piano chords and a delightfully subdued guitar lead. DOL do not indicate the source of their recordings, but on my system this LP, and the others I have, sound much like older CDs.

And maybe I'm totally wrong here but, wasn't this record released on the United Artists Jazz label in 1962 - and not on Blue Note as stated on the jacket and mofi labels? If not for an inspirational collaboration of tremendous creative outpouring, one wonders what fate may have befallen Evans.
