About this deal

The bit between Bullington Cross (where the A34 and A303 have a junction) about 10 miles from where it disappears into the A3 right down almost to Yeovil at Podimore Cross I know it like the back of my hand.

There was little real active hunting for villains – apart from one Keystone Cops moment when the squad car chasing a suspect managed to lose the bus he was travelling on. Having spent most of my life living and working along various points on the A303, I thoroughly enjoyed this book as I could relate to the places described.Hill Farm to Lopcombe Corner - A272 (This has the benefit of making the A272 'bypass' of Winchester more obvious.

In it, Tom Fort drives the length of the A303 road from Basingstoke in Hampshire to Honiton in Devon. Tom Fort's book, named for a well-used English road, is a smoother ride: elegantly written, with a dry humour and an eyebrow raised at the failed "smart solutions" of transport ministers.

I felt it was a shame that he didn't actually make more of his love of rivers and fishing, as he was writing at his best when he veered toward this topic.

BBC4 have made some riveting programmes on roads in the last few years such as The Secret History of the Motorway. Describes a book or dust jacket that has the complete text pages (including those with maps or plates) but may lack endpapers, half-title, etc. He was very pleased and intrigued to receive it as a Christmas gift, and looked forward to reading it.

The change is more likely to have been because the A303 was assessed as more suitable for future improvements. There's an abundance of information nuggets in this book, plotting an in depth history of the people and events along this 90 mile stretch of southern England. Even if the A358->A303 renaming went ahead as you describe I see no possible reason for that to present a case for renumbering the A30 as A35. Four-and-a-half thousand years ago the bluestones of Stonehenge were conveyed west from the river Avon along a small section of its route.
