Operations like recording, adjusting levels, deleting bad takes and adding marks are just a button press away. The combination of the sources are flexible; recording the built-in microphones along with a pair of external Mics such as close-up and ambient microphones, or recording the built-in Mics along with a balanced line input such as the feed from a mixer along with the sound in the room. Designed for use in field recording, ENG, podcasts, interviews, music recording, and ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian response), X6 can record audio from external microphones, via the two 3-pin XLR connections; using the dual A-B/X-Y microphone, or a mix of both. The 'peak reduction' function, 'automatic level control' function, the switched limiter, and the low-cut filter (40/80/120/220Hz )are all present, as are the basic recording aids: an 'overdub' mode, which allows one to record over a previous take, while keeping the original; an 'auto record' feature, which starts and pauses recording when the audio input level crosses a definable threshold; a self-timer for delaying the start of recording; a two-second pre-recording buffer; and manual or automatic track incrementation, which can move recording into a new file without a pause. The optional AK-BT1 Bluetooth adapter allows remote control via Android or iOS device when using the free to download Tascam remote control app.

In addition to normal stereo channel recording and Dual Recording mode, DR-40X has "4CH Mode" that can record two different stereo feeds simultaneously.It can be combined with speed control and a special dictation EQ making it useful for transcribing minutes recordings, for example. Speaking of phones and computers, the USB connectivity can be used in three ways: for power only, to use the DR-40X as an SD card reader (to transfer recordings), or for computer audio interfacing. DR-40X has a Dual Recording mode that captures a copy of your take but at a lower level, as a safety track in case of sudden distortion.
