Extreme Doormat: Miss Minchin's sister is far kinder but is completely dominated by her until the end of the story when she finally speaks her mind. A Birthday, Not a Break: The news that Captain Crewe died after having lost all his money arrives during Sara's birthday party. About the novel itself, I would say, it suits very young girls only if they are quite mature (particularly, if they are intellectually gifted; and/or if their maturity has been forwarded accidentally, by woes for instance, or family misunderstanding) ; if not, I would not recommand this novel before ten. The story of kind-hearted Sara Crewe and her struggles at boarding school, as she goes from riches to rags following the death of her beloved father. Her father died of a stroke when she was two, causing the family to fall on hard times, eventually settling in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1865, just after the Civil War.

After 4 years at the school, during Sara's 12th birthday party, the owner found out that Sara's father had died and had lost all of his money. Cope by Pretending: After Sara becomes destitute, she tries to lose herself in fantasies of being a princess locked in the Bastille who will soon be freed, or who is living among the common people to learn about them, to distract herself from her suffering. To distract his master from his own sorrows, he tells Mr Carrisford about the "little girl in the attic. As above, I was half-expecting an attempt at escape to be made (but without the wolves), or Sara’s father to reappear. But she soon finds there are other children with no friends, and before she knows it she has more friends than she can count!

Forced to work from dawn until dusk as the school’s unpaid servant, she looks over the rooftops from her damp attic room and dreams of a better life. Furthermore, Sara's personality has been made significantly more obedient and kind than in the novel.Since it would have looked badly to have turned this little girl out into the street she turned her into a servant. Too Hungry to Be Polite: The street girl Sara gives five of her penny buns to tears ravenously into them, exclaiming only, "Oh my! The owner of the school didn't like Sara very much, but had to treat her nicely because of how much money her father was paying the school. Spoiled Sweet: Sara's a bit naive about the state of the world at first, but even before things get horribly awful she realizes that there are people less fortunate than she is and doesn't act like a Rich Bitch.

Her mum is not alive and yet her dad wealthy, soft hearted dies because of his passion to find the diamond mines. Carrisford, her late father's friend, and the diamond mine they both invested in was not a failure but a success. Of course, as a French I was rather spoiled about "A Little Princess" pictures, because we had editions with illustrations by Marc Bloch, a true wonder.Darkest Hour: When Sara's attic party is caught and Sara is subjugated to another day without food, and Sara glumly tries to sleep to dream of something nice. For the next two years Miss Minchin starves and overworks Sara, turning her into a menial servant and unpaid tutor, with the prospect of turning her into an under-paid teacher when she is old enough. Her strong character enables her to fight successfully against her new-found poverty and the scorn of her fellows.

A masterpiece of Victorian children's literature, this novel demonstrates kindness, resourcefulness and resilience. The incorrigible toddler is now asking the infamous question: 'Why do I have to go to bed when I'm not tired?
