The film documents the work of the Mi'kmaq Water Protectors to protect the Sipekne'katik River from the brine being dumped into it by Alton Gas. Critics praised its message of environmental justice, its depiction of diversity, and the watercolor illustrations, for which Goade won the 2021 Caldecott Medal, becoming the first Indigenous recipient of the award. The illustrator, Michaela Goade, was raised in Southeast Alaska, home of the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian tribes. There is a pledge at the end of the book for all of us to become earth stewards and water protectors.

The audiobook version and animated adaptation were also well received; Brian Wilson, a reviewer for Booklist, praised the use of sound effects such as waves crashing and the hissing of the snake. I pledge to make this world a better place by being a steward of the Earth and a protector of the water. Her images first focus on an Indigenous child's local community, and later include all skin tones: The water flows beyond their land, so the damage caused by the "black snake" of the oil pipeline threatens everyone. A glossary and an illustrator's note are also included, and it's significant that Goade mentions including certain visual details in honor of Carole Lindstrom's Ojibwe heritage. The Water Protectors' Journey Along the Sipekne'katik River was produced and directed by Eliza Knockwood and premiered in May 2018.
