About this deal

Only question then would be would they stick with Death Guard or slot in Necrons as the opponents of choice? Can anyone comment on whether the Elite rule book is substantially more helpful for learning than the Recruit book? It was only a couple of weeks back week in our Warhammer Indomitus Review that I said, “I can’t imagine that there won’t be some kind of starter box on the shelves once Indomitus has sold out”! Many, like my local Bad Moon Cafe, run ‘learn to play’ Warhammer sessions where you can meet like-minded novices.

Now, I may sound like I’m being insincere here but this is a small innovation that really simplifies a core mechanic of the game. There’s a decent amount of stuff in the Kill Team Starter Set box, and as I said above, anyone who snapped up a copy of Kill Team: Octarius will recognise quite a lot of it.Two of them have a small rock outcropping the scarabs are skittering over, but still…it’s a flash and you’re done. Gone are the days of playing with starter sets on bare tables, having to source your own boxes to use as terrain! They, too, have very minimal mould line cleanup and a very beginner-friendly range as far as painting goes. It contains two starting armies – a Space Marines Lieutenant and a squad of Assault Intercessors to pit against a Royal Warden, Warriors, and Scarabs for the Necrons.

There is, of course, no need to paint them before you use them, but everything in Warhammer looks better with a few coats of paint. Well, almost all the information you could ever need – it doesn’t have all that useful stuff in the Kill Team Compendium, but I’ve promised myself I won’t start on that here today (because I spent quite a few words on it in the Octarius review). If you just want to dip your toes into the Warhammer 40,000 hobby and see what it’s all about, check out the Getting Started magazine . Packed along with this stuff you’ll find the obligatory bag-o-bases for all of the models in the set and a set of 10 white six-sided dice. They go together very easily and there are levels of dynamism and motion that leave almost all of the previous Primaris Space Marine kits in the dust.As far as I can tell, the double-sided game mat has the same (and if not the same, a very familiar) print on it to the gaming board that came with Kill Team: Octarius. Canoptek Scarab Swarms: Flying hordes of these insectile machines chew through armour, flesh and bone with impunity. There’s a bit of a change-up in the approach with these, previously, each version would come with more models.

The Recruit edition is a tempting offer, both to get a few more cheap guys to practice on and also because it purportedly includes a set of tutorial missions to gradually teach the rules. One thing that we both found a bit of a pain is that there are no wound tokens or trackers included in the set.

Well, okay, yes they kind of are still measured in inches as each side (or shape) of one of the Combat Gauges represents a different distance in inches that’s used in game – be it movement or weapon range. What’s more, by combining a Recruit and Elite Edition, you’ll get loads of units and two different types of Character too! With larger components and less stuff to stick together, they’re a much easier build (not that the DkoK were particularly hard in the first place). Remember to look at the manual to determine the abilities of the weapons and what they can offer in terms of battlefield strength.

Even the box it comes in is neat, as it’s designed so it can be used as a piece of terrain to add some extra atmosphere. As far as I can tell, the smaller Core Rules book that comes with the Kill; Team Starter Set is largely identical to its full-sized forbearer. Datasheets – providing you with rules for all the models in the set, plus a set of expansion options for when you want to branch out with new kits.
