About this deal

I really liked this book, not only because I had no idea about Algeria's troubled past and France's part in it, but I liked the characters and the dry humour. Goddard provides a harrowing and insightful look at the complex past and present with a France that could not accept that its colonial rule in Algeria came to an end with independence, intent on punitive and destabilisation strategies whilst continuing to profit from the oil and gas production in the Sahara. Mr Goddard combines fact and fiction in this thriller which left me wanting to know more about the history of Algiers both before and after independence from France.

In the present, Stephen isn't telling Suzette the whole truth - he's something to hide - literally - because he realises he could be in danger, and Taleb and Hidouchi start trawling files and CCTV to get on the trail of Zarbi. A delicate blend of fact and fiction take you on an engaging delve into the history of The Algerian conflict with France.I loved the world-weary Superintendent Taleb with his dry sense of humour and self-deprecating manner. And the writing itself is tight and the plot well executed, with the author's dry humour and wit shining through on occasion.

Harriet disappeared in Paris during that time and Stephen has spent his life trying to find out what happened to her.Yes, there's a few things to hold on to for a while whilst other things happen or are explained but that's par for the course for this genre book so nothing unexpected there. Yet despite the brilliance of his plotting it is his intensely drawn characters that drive the mysteries forward. There is conspiracy, political intrigue and scandal, but also some humorous banter to lighten the darker aspects of the period and setting in Algeria's colonial past. It tells the story of Jack Reacher, an enigmatic ex-military policeman who wanders America solving crimes. The plot is a complex one but it’s very clever, it’s written in such a way that it engages from the start and part of this is to do with the characters of Hidouchi and especially of Taleb who I like very much.
