So when I came across The Summer House and realized it was a standalone novel instead of part of a long series, I decided to give it a chance. But he faces resentment, non-cooperation, and outright hostility from both the local Cops as well as the Military base. Next is a series of menacing events—someone knows she is getting too close to learning the truth of that night. Known for their lethal capabilities in neutralizing enemy positions, it seems to be a crime committed to satisfy a personal vendetta and out of unwavering allegiance to their leader. I was expecting a fluffy read, but instead I found this book had plenty of depth and emotion, relatable family dynamics, and it was highly entertaining.

There were different POVs and maybe too many because it was hard for the author to keep her facts straight. A great summer read that I could really relate to--a summer home filled with family and lots of swimming, great meals prepared by the family matriarch, and (when we got old enough! When her grown children stopped coming to the Summer House, she and her husband decided that it was time to sell the place.

This made a great juxtaposition with Ollie and his fiancée, Elise, who I had great pleasure in disliking! The Army, though, sends its own investigating team, led by Major Jeremiah Cook, himself an NYPD veteran. I have trouble giving a rating when it seems like it's not the book's fault, but it's just not for me. All in all, The Summer House was an entertaining beach read and I would recommend it to readers who enjoy a little romance, a lot of family drama, and even a few tears here and there.There were lots of laugh-out-loud hilarious moments but also some really heartfelt and touching ones as well. Cook is a war veteran and former NYPD cop who suffers daily from a serious leg injury suffered when his Humvee was struck by an IED in Afghanistan. Keri Beevis is quickly becoming a go to author for me with well written, believable suspense novels. I loved the setting, the messy family dynamics, and how easy it was to relate to Hannah McKinnon’s characters. an absolutely perfect beach read- Heather McKinnon manages to capture the essence of summer in this book perfectly.
