Out there in the deepest sea lies the Black Rock: a huge, dark and spiky mass that is said to destroy any boats that come near it! I hesitate to say anything negative about this book, because it's one of the more beautiful picture books I've seen in a while. She had heard of the legend of Black Rock, how it doesn’t stay in one place, caused many wrecks, and it’s as big as a mountain. An original picture book story that is superbly illustrated from cover to cover, Joe Todd-Stanton’s “The Secret of Black Rock” is a compelling and entertaining read for children ages 5 to 8, making it an extraordinary and highly recommended addition to family, elementary school, and community library collections. The rest of the story leaves us with a strong message about how we judge outsiders and a nice ecocritical commentary too. This is an exceptionally illustrated modern folk-tale […] You will love Erin and her large heart, courage, sense of adventure, and ability to stand up for what she believes in! I highly recommend everyone to read this book, either for yourself, for your kids, or have your kids read it. The gentle environmental message takes on a kind of magic in Todd-Stanton’s pictures of Erin suspended in the ocean among incandescent jellyfish or facing down a monstrous, weaponised fishing fleet in the moonlight. My daughter really liked it and said she was so glad I bought it anyway because she loved the story, illustrations and sea creatures. The Vocabu-Library resource from Vocabulary Ninja is a comprehensive vocabulary resource designed to unpick and explain the vocabulary found within classic and modern children’s literature. It was with some trepidation that I picked up Todd-Stanton's next book since I had enjoyed Arthur and the Golden Rope so much but I have not been disappointed. Every few weeks the children will be invited into a battle where they can challenge other children in KS1! The secret of black rock is not an uncommon incidence where the people would like to create the environment. The experience of reading this book was so immersive, and I find myself thinking about it days later, which surprised me. Although the story is based around a fishing village, nothing is caught or killed and the book carries the message of preserving ocean life. We as a school have done so well, so elt's finish on a high and keep breaking our record for number of children taking part, and see if we can finish with some more medals!
