About this deal

To be honest they went completely over my mum and Kizzy's heads, but we proceeded with the game checking the card meanings and the rules as we went along.

What tends to happen is that in the first two or even three races everyone behaves themselves, just to see how the rolls of the dice and the game plays out. However, if a horse lands on a hazard (a jump) other players, or sometimes even the owner of the horse, have the opportunity to play a Really Nasty Card. Jockeys compete to have their horses in the best position for a strong run down the stretch; most games are very close at the end. You can either play as an owner of a horse or as a punter, so you can either bet and race your own horse or bet on a rival's horse. How you go about winning however is completely up to you, as the game comes complete with a pack of "Really Nasty" playing cards for you to sabotage the race to effect your opponents. The elected bookmaker controls the game--lane placings are drawn before each race, and the horse that draws the inside lane starts. Grades revolve with each subsequent race, so every horse gets to be the fastest horse at least once.

The board states it takes around 90 minutes, but my memory is of longer games, especially as it reaches the later races and the stakes get higher. To come out triumphant though, you have to do your best scheming, conniving and plotting to bring down your opponents before they get you! The way that the horses move is controlled by the throw of the dice, with each number of the die corresponding the amount of lengths which are made by the horse. Combine that with my gadget obsessed, vinyl loving husband, and you have life "Inside the Wendy House! During the race the players move their horses around the board, either trying to reach the finish line before the others or attempting to make sure the horse they bet on finishes first.

Firstly, by getting your horse placed first, second or third in the race and secondly, by placing bets on winning horses. How the horses are moved and dependant on what you throw on the dice, throw a 1, the horse moves 1 length, throw a 2, the horse moves 2 lengths forward, this is the same if a 3, 4, 5 or 6 is thrown. There is also a set of mischief cards to help you create havoc with the other horses and riders in the race. There are rules that control the manner of racing as well, such as changing lanes, cornering and blocking, plus the special Early Pace, Quicken Up and Finish Well sections that give extra momentum for your horse. I like the action, and the player screwage, it makes every race important and the end of the game ensures that everyone is it until the end.

We wanted to the children to enjoy the game have some fun but also teach them about game plans and strategies without being too nasty or conniving. The player that wins the most money over the course of the six rounds, each round consisting of a single race, is the winner, and money can be earned either by a player’s horse finishing among the top three at the end of the race, or by placing a bet on the winning horse. Originally published in 1966 as part of the 3M sports game line, Win, Place and Show was the first modern horse-racing board game. Playing the Nasty Cards can be used to your best advantage with some clever plotting and you need a thick skin in case someone plays one against you.A bookmaker is assigned at the start of the game to control the lane placings which are drawn before each race, and the horse that draws the inside lane.

Dice rolls play a part in determining the outcome, but there is plenty of opportunity for strategy use with lane changes, blocking, etc.You need to have a game plan, be devious, manipulative and sneaky, the more cunning you can be, the better the game. uk has been a home to passionate debate and intelligent discussion for horse racing enthusiasts since the year 2000. However you will still have to consider the odds and your fellow betters to have the best chance of winning.
