About this deal

There was a Stephen King-like tension throughout, with a few hair raising scares thrown in for good measure. If you’re a Megan Miranda fan, I say give this book a shot as you might get more out of it than I did. In the winter, it’s dark, cold, snowy, and treacherous, and the hiking trails are extremely dangerous.

The Last to Vanish | Book by Megan Miranda | Official

There’s a mixed bag of characters which works well in building up a suspect pool which when all is revealed I’ve got the answer completely wrong! But despite ten years of seeing the citizens of Cutter Pass just about every single day, she still can tell she is considered an outsider. I really think that particular storyline could have been explored more as well, but alas, it wasn't. But, if you value gorgeously written and richly imagined places where the book doesn’t leave you after the final page, I urge you to try this. But I also think that Abby’s connection to the Fraternity Four should have been revealed sooner, to give the reader time to absorb this and understand what happened a bit better.I loved the setting of this one - a small town, Cutter's Pass, adjacent to the Appalachian Trail in the mountains of North Carolina, which is notorious for at least six missing hikers over the years. The mysteries about the place and missing persons are getting in your nerves, you keep flipping the pages to find out how those mysteries will unfold, who will be the perpetrator, squirming in your seat, restraining your panic attacks, breathing heavily. And the explanation for the missing four was decent, however there wasn't a clear reason for the other three. As an avid reader, I often find myself reading a book description and not being able to remember whether I’ve read it before. Spoilers ahead: It was super disjointed that the three disappearances at the end didn't tie to the first ones.

The Last to Vanish by Megan Miranda | Goodreads

The Last to Vanish started off super slow, and the pace didn’t pick up until the last 25% of the book. After all, these disappearances that span twenty years surely mean that someone in Cutter’s Pass, someone Abby has known for years is either responsible or knows what happened. Thank you to Scribner / Marysue Rucci Books for providing me with an arc via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I agree that the setting was great but honestly, this was such a good setup for a supernatural read.Trey’s questions stir up the town sheriff, the local tavern’s owners, and a young man who leads ghost tours, making Abby feel even more like an outsider because she’s constantly left out of conversations and others don’t take her questions seriously. A claustrophobic and suspenseful whodunit…that ponders the eternal question of how well we really know those closest to us. The main character, Abbie even though she was a young adult , makes the most stunning decisions, some of them so dumb it left me shaking my head. Maybe, but the sasquatches whom the volcano displaced contributed to the statistics, too, if only out of self-defense. I highly recommend this story to those who love a thriller with suspense and interesting plot twists.
