About this deal

Their humor and lighthearted banter carry the novel through the deadly investigation to its satisfying conclusion. Osman follows The Bullet That Missed with a bittersweet mystery about the problems facing many older people: dementia, computer fraud, death.

Suffice it to say, Elizabeth is not herself so Joyce steps up to take the lead in the new investigation. Same old/same old, until police from the outside take over the investigation of Kuldesh Sharma’s death.Solving mysteries and murders is something at which they excel: “the antiques business, where the tricks of the trade are as old as the objects themselves,” doesn’t faze them. The Man Who Died Twice] captures the spirit of older folks who don't want to be pigeonholed by their age and who capture the charming insouciance of those who've seen a lot.

Bob Whittaker, aka Computer Bob, doesn’t seem fazed by his new friends’ dangerous interests—a sure sign he’ll fit right in with the brave, meddlesome Thursday Murder Club. Antiques dealer Kuldesh Sharma helped the group unravel their last mystery; now, he’s been shot execution-style after receiving a suspicious package. Set in a high-end retirement village, the books start four senior citizens whose very varied life experiences and careers (there’s a nurse, a therapist, a union organizer, and a spy) are put to good use solving crimes. Osman, 52, was well known to British audiences, first as a longtime television producer and then as the presenter of the game show Pointless, but he’d never before written fiction and the success he found was unprecedented. But unlike most crime novelists, he ensures his book’s strength and momentum stem not from its plot or its thrills but rather its perfectly formed characters. This storyline marks the series’s transition from quietly poignant to deeply moving, with Osman giving us some of his best writing yet as Elizabeth’s situation prompts the other Club members to reflect on their own griefs and lost loves, with one character disclosing some sad secrets. Longtime followers will know that I am a big fan of this series, having reviewed the earlier titles in the series. Fiendishly clever and brimming with wit on every page, The Man Who Died Twice is the tonic we all need. This will definitely hit home and hard for readers who have themselves had family members suffer from this debiliating condition. Salma and Bilal are your typical British couple looking to move off the estate and into a quiet suburban neighborhood.
