About this deal

Grammy voters might be wary of granting her the same honor once again in such a short time frame, even if Midnights is deserving of the trophy. The 1989 album changed my life in countless ways, and it fills me with such excitement,” she wrote on social media at the time. She previously dropped Fearless (Taylor’s Version), Red (Taylor’s Version) and Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), which means there are only two left: Taylor Swift (Taylor’s Version) and Reputation (Taylor’s Version).

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - FEBRUARY 05: (FOR EDITORIAL USE ONLY) Taylor Swift attends the 65th GRAMMY .It’s also great for Swift, who’s earning more money from increased sales that will impact her performance on the Billboard charts and likely add up to one of the year’s best album debut weeks. When South Korean boy band Stray Kids’ MAXIDENT topped the most recent Billboard 200 chart for the week of Oct.

Olivia Rodrigo's Guts, SZA's SOS, Foo Fighters' But Here We Are and numerous other outstanding releases are all in the running and likely nominees. It continues to sell and stream incredibly well, even after Swift dropped another full-length and scored multiple hits not featured on Midnights. But then there’s “Bejeweled”, a late, 1989-like highlight on which she announces to an unappreciative partner, a few seconds in: “And by the way, I’m going out tonight. In today’s streaming-centric music industry, physical albums have become collectible tokens of fandom, and artists have been responding to growing demand. On October 27th, Taylor Swift became the most-streamed artist in a single day in Spotify history, and 1989 (Taylor’s Version) became Spotify’s most-streamed album in a single day in 2023 so far. Talk your talk and go viral,” she sings, in reference to the maelstrom of outside interest in her six-year relationship with actor Joe Alwyn. Voters may hesitate to elevate her above such esteemed artists who have also achieved this milestone, especially considering she’s still so young.

That plethora of options is great for fans who may want a different version than their friends, or who — as many seem to — feel driven to collect them all. The sound is fully modern (synths you’d want to eat or sleep in, low end that sits comfortably on your chest), while the aesthetic (soft focus, wood panelling, tracklist on the cover) is decidedly mid-century, much like the Mad Men-inspired title of its brooding opener, “Lavender Haze”—a song about finding refuge in the glow of intimacy. On Saturday, Spotify announced that the superstar had broken not one but two records on the music service with the release of her newest album, 1989 (Taylor’s Version), which dropped Friday at midnight ET. There are traces of melancholy layered in (see: “sapphire tears on my face”), but the song feels like a triumph, the sort of unabashed, extroverted fun that would have probably seemed out of place in the lockdown indie of 2020’s folklore and evermore.Furthermore, Swift's most recent Album of the Year triumph was only back in 2021 for her alternative set Folklore.

And then out Swift goes, striding through the centre of the song like she would the room: “I can still make the whole place shimmer,” she sings, relishing that last word. So by offering four different versions of Midnights per format, Swift is at least quadrupling her revenue from some super fans, as well as their impact on the charts. To be perfectly honest, this is my most FAVORITE re-record I’ve ever done because the 5 From The Vault tracks are so insane. On Midnights, her tenth LP and fourth in as many years—if you don’t count the two she’s just re-recorded and buttressed with dozens of additional tracks—Swift sounds like she’s really enjoying her work, playing with language like kids do with gum, thrilling to the texture of every turn of phrase, the charge in every melody and satisfying rhyme.

And yet, perhaps the real takeaway was the manner in which she spoke about her craft that night, some 20 years after writing her first song at the age of 12. Swift announced 1989 would be the next Taylor’s Version she would be dropping during the closing night of The Eras Tour in Los Angeles in August. Swift previously set the record for the most-streamed album in a single day with her 2022 album Midnights , which featured all new songs, including hits like “Anti-Hero,”“Karma” and “Bejeweled.
