About this deal

Remender often takes an idea like this and examines it from a few angles, writing through his analysis as he (what seems like) figures it out for himself in his personal life.

Seven to Eternity, Vol. 4: The Springs of Zhal - Goodreads Seven to Eternity, Vol. 4: The Springs of Zhal - Goodreads

It's reminiscent of when you jump into a superhero comic which references half a century of previous comics without having read them. The Mud King’s assumption of power is not motivated by hubris or lust, but by fear and childhood abandonment. The narrative is peppered with cliffhangers and plot twists that keep you riveted, making you question your own moral compass — who’s good and who’s bad? The characters travel through different cities in the setting of Zhal, and we end up learning a lot about the lore of this universe. By this final volume, the story is some place else--some place ultimately worth reading, but wow what a place to end it all. This is a perfect blend of science fiction and fantasy that totaled with the world building made for a fun read. Osidis presents as almost pious: Mr Opena draws Osidis with hair shorn around the ears, but long on the top and with a full beard: it is not cut through vanity but as an expression of fidelity.

In a fantasy world where the King of lies (not his actual name) rules, a bunch of misfits warriors kidnap him and plan to go over half the world to get the magic that'll help get rid of him once and for all. I never liked the narration in the book, and the ending kind of makes it better, but it also doesn't.

I loved all the story twists, but would have liked a bit more on what the daughter was up to throughout the main story.

At least I will have the TPB's on the shelf and you can bet your biscuits that I'll be picking up any deluxe collections they come out with for this title. I had some issues with the story, in that there is so much for the reader to learn and understand about the world, there wasn't a lot of time for actual world-building. I hope Remender can get a better handle on this in the next volume--now that things have settled down into a journey narrative, the story should be easier to follow and perhaps enough background can be filled in to make this a worthwhile endeavor. Meaning, I was often confused about what side certain people were on, how/why are they involved here, etc. You're beaten down every day with each breath you take from the air, possibly from someone else even, and yet you will do anything to maintain the rhythm.Problem is Remender's pacing is choppy and the first two issues were somewhat hard to come by before I finally got the gist. And he does destroy some fantasy tropes along the way, like Adam's found family, which evolves about as far from "found" and "family" as one can get. Seven to Eternity, thanks to Jerome Opeña's undeniably great artwork also has the potential of being grand and beautiful. Finally, the few full pages and splash pages are a device Opeña uses sparingly, but when he does, they’re jaw-dropping and make the world feel huge. It didn’t really stick with me, so I didn’t consider the other volumes a priority when they were released.A seriously cool world with tons of messed up backstory, a fantastic cast of characters, cool magic and a pretty kickass villain. I have had enough time to sit with my feelings on this, and whilst I thought this was a good conclusion to this fantastic series, I do not think it was the best.
