About this deal

While our selections include herbicide-based products, which are among the most effective ways of killing tree stumps, we also select products that will get the job done while being easier on the environment. Although often large and heavy, stumps can be removed with the right equipment and technique, or removed by weedkiller.

Triclopyr: Triclopyr is a systemic herbicide that tricks the living roots of a stump into rapid growth that overwhelms the tree and kills it. If you would like to change your settings or withdraw consent at any time, the link to do so is in our privacy policy accessible from our home page. Although it is not a legal requirement to wear protective clothing when handling and using amateur/home pesticides, the RHS recommends wearing gloves, Wellington boots and other protective clothing as a sensible precaution. Chemical stump-removal products help kill any size stump that would be challenging to remove manually. Tree-stump killers eliminate the need to chop or dig up stubborn stumps, and they prevent new shoots from forming. It is very difficult to pinpoint an exact amount of Roundup that you will need, it largely depends on the size, age, and kind of tree you are dealing with.

This easy mix liquid concentrate formulation is approved for use all around the garden, on gravel areas, paths, drives and along fences. ROUNDUP® Tree Stump Weedkiller can be used to clean up weedy areas before planting vegetables, flowers, shrubs and to renovate overgrown areas. Others are looking to stop volunteer trees from growing where they shouldn’t be growing, and we also considered that need. However, Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, has been at the center of controversy due to its links to cancer in humans. Ideally the stump should be removed entirely, but if this is not possible alternative methods usually give satisfactory results. Both Tordon and Roundup require 7–14 days to fully kill whatever tree or stump they have been applied to. You can either spray it directly on the foliage of the tree or drill holes into the stump or the trunk and spray it into the holes. Reapply Roundup after 14 days if the tree is showing signs of continued growth, such as green sprouts from roots or cut trunk. Some users want to get rid of old, seasoned stumps, so we included products that help dead stumps decompose faster.

If you perform proper stump treatment with Roundup and do not spray surrounding plants directly then a Roundup application will leave nontarget plants and trees unharmed, while killing target plants down to the root. While one’s first instinct might be to reach for a tree-stump killer, there are several nonchemical solutions to unwanted stumps that are very effective. Some types of stump remover, especially those containing potassium nitrate, are flammable, so don’t use them near an open flame or smoke during application. This ready-to-use liquid comes in an 8-ounce bottle and features an included brush-top applicator for painting the product directly onto the surface of the stump. Because the chemical gets neutralized by the soil very quickly, it becomes harmless to other vegetation and organisms. Many tree-stump killers use chemicals such as triclopyr, picloram, and glyphosate that can be harmful to wildlife and can even cause damage to surrounding trees and landscaping. Applying nitrate fertilisers also does not improve their burning qualities, or speed up rotting, even though these fertilisers are oxidising agents. The concentrated chemical comes in a 32-ounce bottle and should be diluted at the rate of 8 to 16 tablespoons per gallon of water. The product is best for small stumps that are commonly associated with woody bushes and vines, including kudzu and poison oak. Although these stumps are incapable of sending up new shoots, they can be hazardous or stand in the way of new landscaping plans.
