About this deal

Our favourite octogenarians are back to solve yet another mystery with The Thursday Murder Club and this time they're set to face their most deadly opponents yet! They soon discover that an old friend got himself caught up in a dangerous situation and has been murdered. Osman doesn’t disappoint… Everything is here that fans of the series have come to expect: humour, warmth, the confounding of expectations as these pensioners investigate… Along with the laughs, there is grief, and an ending that is handled sensitively (I was weeping)… We all need a regular injection of the Thursday Murder Club to keep our spirits up. I'd love one of those books that's a caper around the world, but that also has some truth about the world, and also makes you laugh and has also has some of the aesthetic of Thursday Murder Club, but it's Da Vinci Code.

The Last Devil To Die - Penguin Books UK

In the week leading up to 19 December, it sold 134,514 copies, making it the first debut novel ever to be Christmas number one. What is truly special in the books are the characters, whose age allows for a beautiful kind of interaction… For all the fizz of jokes and romance, the books carry with them a sense of grief and sadness which becomes much stronger in The Last Devil to Die…The kindness is his books comes out of something greater for Osman. That’s a high bar to set from the get-go, but Osman has easily achieved it in subsequent books… This book is as delightful as the others. The minutiae of people's lives, which is actually what we spend most of the time on, is very present in these books.

Real threats and real consequences, and a real understanding that while the motivations of thieves and murderers may be complex, the real villain of the piece is unstoppable illness and hard choices for those who may be left behind. This is the 30th book, but considering Alex has survived "Kill Alex Cross" before, chances are he survives this one. It's Christmas in Coopers Chase and a package (not the festive kind) that was smuggled across the English coast on Boxing Day has gone missing and chaos has been unleashed. With the body count rising, the clock ticking down, and trouble firmly on their tail, has their luck finally run out? While the gang’s sleuthing will continue in future instalments of The Thursday Murder Club, we are extremely excited that with this new deal Richard will also be introducing us to a new series. But unlike most crime novelists, he ensures his book’s strength and momentum stem not from its plot or its thrills but rather its perfectly formed characters.

The Last Devil to Die: A Thursday Murder Club Mystery

Shocking news reaches them—an old friend has been killed, and a dangerous package he was protecting has gone missing. And I thought, that's quite a fun detective, a reluctant traveller, having to go around the world and saying 'oh god, really? As bodies start piling up, Elizabeth enlists Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron in the hunt for a ruthless murderer. The joy of writing this, is dark things happen in these books, but you can always talk about daytime TV and cakes. The writing is pithy and fresh, so much so that I kept writing down lines from The Last Devil To Die. I cannot think of another series with a more moving exploration of love after a lifetime together, and The Last Devil To Die reduced me to tears at more than one point. I certainly hope there are MANY more Thursday Murder Club books to come as they are so entertaining. It deals sensitively and touchingly with ageing while providing engaging plots that are hard to put down. The mysteries in the novel are intriguing and multilayered, and the cops have some warm and funny interactions with the lead characters.
