About this deal

By lowering the center of gravity and depowering the boat, we had less force aloft pitching the boat side to side and fore and aft. With the common slab reefing system, reefing is fairly simple, though it’s a skill that requires some practice.

Depending on the conditions, a boat with two reef points and a double-line system allows you to reef the mainsail in stages from the first to the second reefs. Then during reefing the webbing is just hooked over the horn - having no weight it does not seem so inclined to fall off, plus the loop length can have an inch or two of free length so that it is not a mission getting the reef tack cringle pulled down onto the horn over the folds of reefed sail (otherwise I find, with a main of heavy sailcloth, it is sometimes easier to just drop a couple of slides out of the track to get a couple of folds out of the way, which is inconvenient). A couple have mentioned the difficulty with the reefing tack cringle in the sail and keeping it on the horn until the halyard is tensioned. Whether you are cruising or racing you will need to examine the pros and cons of adding full battens to your main sail. The position of the aft turning block on the boom is a little back from the cringle when the sail is reefed. Nothing beats the feeling when your boat wakes up and all the forces at play work together to make your sails sing and your hull hum.

Our designers get to know you, your boat, the conditions your sailing in, long term plans, and experience level to select the best cloth, weight, and features for your sail. After securing, the screws can be removed and the surplus length inside the boom cut off, to prevent possible snagging of internal control lines on the sharp ends of the screws.Product lines, materials, and characteristics of rope vary to cater for specific needs When it comes to sailing, the choice of ropes can make all the difference in your performance on the water. If not then when the tack is pulled back to flatten the foot you are relying on the sail bolt rope in the track to resist the pull and can get a sail distortion as the luff is pulled back.

Smart people took this into consideration when they designed your boat, but then again Mother Nature is a fickle sort and can do things those smart people never considered. If this is not done correctly, the outhaul or foot of the sail cannot be adjusted without the use of a hydraulic ram. This involves having reef points on the sail that can form the new tack and clew when it is lowered, so that a slab of the sail is no longer used below the reef points. Set the Topping Lift, which ensures the boom does not fall accidentally (by using the Barton Boomstrut together with the slab reefing system, this would eliminate the need for a Topping Lift). Reef Hooks are used to hold down the "new" Tack (at the reef point) when jiffy reefing the Mainsail. A sticky mast track or a stiff halyard or block at the mast top can make lowering your main four feet nearly impossible.
