About this deal

I am a huge fan of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, and those books would definitely be a good follow up for kids who read and enjoy The Breadwinner Trilogy.

When Deborah Ellis read about the Taliban occupation of Afghanistan and about their brutal treatment of girls and women, she decided that she had to get involved. I also have an interest in Middle Eastern culture (not the Taliban of course, but the actual culture of the Afghan people and country. Review of Parvana's Journey Archived October 7, 2012, at the Wayback Machine, CM Magazine, University of Manitoba. She leaves along with her mother and younger siblings, but Parvana stays as she looks like a boy and her appearance will be difficult to explain. After an accident causes Diego's family to owe money to the prison in which they are incarcerated in, the boy must earn them money. Parvana and Shauzia make a pact to meet with each other 20 years later in France, at the top of the Eiffel Tower. I’m sure this simple and quick read will stay with you long after you close the final page, especially if you are young. Ignorance about other countries, cultures, and struggles upsets me more than most things, and I think reading this book at a young age could definitely develop a cultural sensitivity and interest in young readers for world issues. In 2006, she wrote the best-seller, I Am a Taxi, which tells the story of a Bolivian boy named Diego whose family was accused of smuggling coca paste, which is used to produce cocaine.

Born in Cochrane Ontario, Ellis and her family moved several times during her childhood due to her parents' work. The Breadwinner, also known as Parvana, [1] is a children's novel by Deborah Ellis, [2] first published in 2001. We also pay respect to Elders past, present and emerging, and extend that respect to other Aboriginal people. The result was The Breadwinner trilogy, which tells the compelling stories of Parvana and her best friend, Shauzia.

Year 8 English Book Review - Ulladulla High School

Throughout the book, Parvana grows closer to her older sister Nooria as well as the woman who appears in the window of a building close to where Parvana works. We would like to acknowledge and pay our respects to the Murramurang people, the traditional owners and custodians of this land. A beautiful mix of childlike innocence and harsh tragedy, this book was very special and wonderful to read. In 2014, she published Moon at Nine, a YA novel based on the true story of two teenage girls who are arrested and thrown in prison in Iran, a country where homosexuality is punishable by death.I would definitely recommend these books to any person who enjoys reading books based on real life events. This book would be the perfect introduction to the reality of war torn Afghanistan for any middle school aged child. It may sound a little weird to say because of the horrors that we may find happening in that part of the world, but I tend to love books that are set in Afghanistan.

Review of Bifocal Archived March 4, 2016, at the Wayback Machine, CM Magazine, University of Manitoba. She was particularly struck by the story of a young girl who had cut off her hair and disguised herself as a boy so she could earn money to support her family. The stories are set against backdrops as diverse as the remote north of Canada to Moscow's Red Square to an opium farm in Afghanistan.Parvana is an 11-year-old girl who lives in Kabul, Afghanistan with her mother Fatana, her father Nurullah, her bossy older sister Nooria, her cheerful younger sister Maryam and her baby brother Ali. This installment was just as good as the first for me and it’s hard for me to choose between the two for a favourite!
