About this deal

The true story of Britain's Special Air Service (SAS) has captivated viewers with the third episode set to air on Sunday night on BBC One for those who have not already binged it on the iPlayer. A quiet man who hardly ever raised his voice, he got the results he wanted by his large (in every way) presence and by example. Filming has just begun on series two of the hit BBC drama SAS Rogue Heroes, created by Steven Knight and made by Kudos (a Banijay UK company) for the BBC with MGM+. Argentina condemns Israel's bombing on Gaza refugee camp that killed more than 50 people as Bolivia severs. The scene is based on a real incident, though it happened in Paris in 1944, by which time Stirling had long been captured.

Mayne was simultaneously a heroic figure in the British Army and a bogeyman to the enemy and, as such, he embodied the powerful psychological impact that the SAS had during World War Two. While Mayne’s portrayal might be contentious, Mortimer thinks that Stirling is accurately depicted in the series.Despite that, Mayne was initially awarded a Victoria Cross for his actions at Oldenburg in April 1945. Most of ‘L’ Detachment’s work is night work and all of it demands courage, fitness and determination of the highest degree and also, and just as important, discipline, skill and intelligence and training. Ben Macintyre’s book, on which the series is based, notes the numbers of planes destroyed by the various members.

Victoria Coren Mitchell, 51, reveals she's given birth to her second child with her comedian husband David,. When other soldiers won’t give up the table, Stirling throws a grenade onto the table and sends the soldiers running. He wrote that during Mayne’s lifetime, exaggerated stories about him were widely circulating; and, secondly, he did his best, according to the way society perceived it at the time, to encapsulate Mayne’s state of mind after the war. f) Some Italians were followed, and the hut they came out of was attacked by sub-machine gun and pistol fire and bombs were placed on and around it. The SAS's origins are currently the subject of major BBC drama SAS Rogue Heroes, which stars Connor Swindells as Stirling and Jack O'Connell as Mayne. As that opening blurb suggests, the show knowingly leans into SAS legend – a legend perpetuated by the self-aggrandising yarn-spinning of “the Phantom Major” David Stirling.

By this action, he succeeded in forcing his way to ground where it was possible to form up and sum up the enemy's defences. On 9 April near Oldenburg, Mayne performed his last great feat of heroics, rescuing some of his men who had been pinned down in a ditch following an ambush. The stanza from Sorley MacLean’s ‘Going Westwards’ appears in From Wood to Ridge, 1999, published by Carcanet Press and is reprinted by kind permission of the publisher.

Little-known right to help YOU beat NHS waiting lists without having to wait for hospitals to invite you. Mayne distinguished himself in his first experience of combat during the Battle of the Litani River. Jack O’Connell’s Mayne is an artistic and sensitive soul who is also the most ruthless when it comes to violence and killing unarmed men.To be fair to Marrinan, at the time he would not have had access to the war diaries which would have given evidence to refute the claim. Jack Kenneth Lyon was number 79 on the list of PoWs preparing to break out of Stalag Luft III in 1944. Queen of Halloween dresses up as a PEACOCK with 10-person entourage while her husband rolls up as an EGG. Obviously, anything by Peaky Blinders’ Steven Knight is unlikely to be a snoozefest, but this high-octane series has been a total triumph.
