It uses Shark’s DuoClean motorised floor head, which has both a standard carpet brush and a soft roller (for hard floors) built into the same unit, so you don’t have to keep switching the floor head as you move from one surface type to another. Even on the lighter hardwood floor setting, we found dust and debris was easily sucked up, with none of the issues we’ve had previously with underpowered vacuums simply pushing balls of dust around.

Shark is a brand that comes up time and time again in round-ups of the best vacuum cleaners and it’s for good reason too. it’s fairly weighty for a cordless vacuum, with the weight split more or less evenly between the floor head and the vacuum engine, which is located up near the handle. Handily, when folded over like this, the vacuum is self-supporting, so it can stand upright without leaning against anything. This is what you’ll largely be using to clean your floors, with separate mode settings for hardwood floors and carpets – the latter of which needs a bit more power to draw up dust and hairs.The filters are placed on the top of the bin, so they’re easy to get to for rinsing in water, but they’re prone to falling out while emptying the collection bin. It’s a shame you can’t optionally turn this off – given the battery would probably drain a little slower – but the added visibility of the lights still makes cleaning a lot easier.

In the end I removed the motorised floor head and the extension wand, installed the brush tool in its place and, with a little scrubbing, I was able to remove the last of the residue from the carpet.With carpet mode selected, the rollers spin faster to agitate the fibres more and clean deeper into the carpet. The headlights and Flexology features make it far easier to clean, too, with the visibility and on-the-fly flexibility to ensure you don’t need to get on your knees to clean in hard-to-reach places. As a cordless vacuum, you’ll be charging this model in between cleaning sessions, with a simple power cable that plug into the top of the vacuum. The battery takes a while to charge at 3hrs 30mins, but as they’re so easy to swap, you could get a second battery to extend the cleaning time available between charges. Although the Shark Anti Hair Wrap with Flexology is fairly weighty, it’s reasonably well balanced across the device.
