Lifting it out of the case and you immediately feel its satisfying heft – it weighs 557g (nearly 20oz). Tap Fly is where the drone is controlled by tapping locations on the mobile device screen rather than using the controller. This means you have to fly the drone in open areas without lamp posts, tall buildings, electricity lines, trees, and other obstacles. It also tends to drift a little when hovering, despite using GPS positioning, so with no collision avoidance, you have to take care when flying and hovering close to obstacles.
Unlike most controllers – even others from Holy Stone – it is not rechargeable but powered by two AA batteries. Videos can be captured in 4K at 30fps and FHD (1080P) at 60fps, and the 3-axis gimbal – alongside Electronic Image Stabilisation – does indeed produce smooth video footage during flights. The controller resembles the folding DJI Mavic 2 Pro controller but has a phone holder at the top rather than a two-arm holder that extends from the bottom. The Holy Stone HS720G has a maximum range of 900 meters before it loses connection with your smartphone and remote control. The phone grip is best described as adequate; it fights a bit for space with the dual antennas, and the weight of our iPhone Pro Max seemed to be pushing the hinge to its limits, but it worked.
Two rough landings later we decided to change the speed mode to High and that solved it – the drone was suddenly under our control. Because it is also capable of travelling slowly then –if the wind is low – careful piloting can also get even feeling shots.

Although this is marketed as a beginner drone, it still has some good features and functions to make it exciting enough for advanced pilots. And although the HS720G doesn’t offer collision avoidance, these features do work, albeit not to the same level of performance as more advanced drones. The 4K camera has 3840x2160 pixels, what you get is what you see, and the remote 90° camera angle and 120°FOV greatly extend your field of vision.
