Perhaps because there are no blinding digital effects shots or dizzying action set pieces, just real people doing real (bad) things in everyday settings, one can take the time to savor the seamlessness of a near perfectly transferred piece of film. Warner Home Video brings Martin Scorsese's 'Goodfellas' to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray as a three-disc combo pack with a flyer for an UltraViolet Digital Copy and glossy slipcover.

Many scenes, including Tommy’s infamous altercation in mid-conversation with Henry, the Layla-scored corpse discovery sequence, Henry’s and Karen’s entrance into the Copacabana, and the discovery of Billy Batts’ bloody body in the trunk of Henry’s car, have all become embedded in popular culture. The overt shades of red during the burial and recovery of Billy Batts’ body are more extreme and, to my eyes, more effective.

Remaining faithful to the original source, the largely stereo presentation feels broad and surprisingly spacious with convincing off-screen effects and fluid, well-balanced channel separation. Many of the comments are mostly surface level thoughts, but it's great listening to these directors offer their take on a Scorsese classic. It’s also worth noting that within the package is a Digital Copy code on a paper insert, which has since expired. Detail is improved, particularly in the darker areas of the frame, and added nuance can be found in the colors, finer textures of clothing and automobiles, and foreground and background depth (particularly in the smoky, multi-layered environment of the Copacabana). While I don't find it to be, as Roger Ebert phrased it, "The best mob movie ever made," it's right up their at the pinnacle of the mount.

Made Men features more vintage interviews with directors Frank Darabont, Antoine Fuqua, Richard Linklater, Jon Favreau, Joe Carnahan, and The Hughes Brothers as they discuss the film and their love for it. so even now, my view of a disc will pretty much be unique as no-one else will be watching that disc on that projector in my room with my settings. His two partners could kill off everyone else involved in the robbery, and slowly start to think about climbing up through the hierarchy of the Mob.

It was one of the initial releases on the DVD format back in the mid to late 90’s and one of the initial Blu-ray and HD-DVD releases as well. Scorsese’s GoodFellas– This new 30 minute documentary features a veritable “who’s who” of Scorsese’s films. Public Enemies: The Golden Age of the Gangster Film– The most robust supplement on the disc is this 106 minute documentary. Surrounds are active and the LFE even have a few moments to shine (when young Henry blows up a car).
