Godox Lux Junior Retro Camera Flash Review with Digital Godox Lux Junior Retro Camera Flash Review with Digital

When Godox announced the release of their retro-inspired Lux Junior flash, I was intrigued - but probably not for the reasons you might think. I did this by guessing combinations of flash power and aperture that would look good, but if you’re a more technical photographer, help is at hand. The Lux Senior has manually adjustable power settings, from full power down to 1/64 in one-stop increments (Full, 1/2, 1/4 … 1/64). They also took a while to reach full power, and were too hot to handle for a while after they went off. The Godox Lux Junior is a very compact and lightweight retro-inspired camera flash that will fit in any pocket, always ready to put on and ready to use in seconds.

Opening it, we find the flash, and underneath a thick sheet of dense foam, the instruction manual, a storage bag and a sync cable in case we want to use it resting on a bracket next to the camera, and not on the hotshoe. While I was able to turn all the other petals back over the base one, I couldn’t close the flash since this needs the petals to be in the 12 o’clock position.

During a recent assignment, I brought it out, and it simply didn't have enough power for dependable news work in uncontrolled environments. I will test and report on these features in my subsequent, more detailed review, but I’m noting them here for completeness, and so that you don’t go away thinking it’s a more simplistic device than it really is.And appreciate the professional photographers from decades ago who only had manual flashes to work with but still made great pictures. For these two photos, I tweaked the settings to give myself a shutter speed of 1/4 sec, and then deliberately shook the camera during the exposure. I'm an amateur photographer who likes making images with pinhole cameras, smartphones and everything in between.

The body is built from plastic with metal and leatherette on the exterior, which matches nicely with the Nikon FM and Leica M3 I brought with me. Even at sunset I spent a fair amount of time fiddling with both camera and flash to get it just right. The photos in this article were shot at 1/64 power, except the “shutter drag” photos (see below) which were at 1/4. Based on this 30-minute exercise – the very opposite of a scientific test – I bring you my first-blush, seat-of-the-pants review of the Godox Lux Senior.

Lux Junior Retro-Styled Manual On-Camera Speedlite | Godox

I ran a few trials where I alternated between manual mode and auto, to see if the auto mode really did adjust the power by itself. In this case, I won’t mention the absence of a rotating/tilting head, because this flash is a pure fashion statement, and I wouldn’t ask it for such features. Imagining the Lux Senior on my old Autocord TLR and new Pen-f dredged up tons of memories of newsroom days! I can’t say it’s expensive for everything else it brings in relation to the Lux Junior, but honestly, it makes you think twice because it’s already starting to enter the territory of a Godox TT685 II Speedlite with TTL, HSS and wireless functions and GN60.

As I mentioned, the flash itself is relatively small - perhaps the width of a deck of cards, and even with the two AAA batteries it feels extremely light. Adopting the same operation method as Lux Junior, the Lux Senior also provides two ways of light control - the auto flash mode and the manual flash mode. Putting the flash ready to use also has its process, and that’s where a good part of the fun of using it lies. When using flashes like the SB910 or the Godox V1, your camera adjusts the LCD/EVF preview based on your flash setting and the camera settings.
